Some sensor help please...

Alrighty, here is the problem. While installing my headers last week, I broke the coolant sensor on the side of the block. I went down to AutoZone and bought a new sensor. The new sensor came with a new pigtail containing two wires, a yellow and a black. The stock sensor pigtail only had one wire coming out of it. The old pigtail would not fit in the new sensor, so I cut off the old pigtail and connected the yellow wire from the new pigtail to the old wire that went to the old sensor. I left the black wire from the new pigtail disconnected due to the fact that the stock one only had one wire hookup. After all this, the temp guage no longer works. The needle just stays at the bottom of the guage and does not move. So today I go and hook the black wire from the new pigtail to a ground thinking that might be the problem. Now the guage slowly rises to the top of the guage (overheating) and stays there. I opened the radiator cap making sure that it was not overheating and it was fine. The fans do not turn on either so I know the temp is fine. Can anyone tell me what could possibly be wrong? Did they give me the wrong sensor? Any ideas?

there shouldnt be any problem because that coolant temp sensor is exactly the same for the head and pump...if the connector didnt fit in the sensor u may wanna look at the metal contact inside and bend it to make sure it wasn't blocking the metal piece inside the sensor. If u have the correct sensor u shouldn't have a problem...ooo make sure u didnt have the connector upside down!
