Suggetions on cam

hey guys can some people help me pick out a cam. i have a 96 6 speed and i want a cam that is gonna give good power over all. i dont want a real extreme cam but i want one that has a nice rough idle. also i need one that will allow me to pass emissions

is a lt4 good?
do i have to remove heads and everything to remove cam?

You do not need to remove the heads to change the cam. IMO I think a good cam for you would Crane Cams CC306. It is a rough cam but still has good street manners. I do not recommend the LT4 Hot Cam because of the fact the cam is so small. It hardly makes a difference.

Try searching the bigger Camaro boards. Their should be links to sites that have complete installs and show you what to do. I had them in my favorites before I had to reformat my computer.

having a rough idle and passing emissions are contradictions. if the LSA is above 112 you will probably pass emissions with a good ignition system and cat. if you went down to 110 you would have a choppy idle and might have a problem with smog. thats basically what determines it. and personally i think the LT4 is an awesome cam...however i dont know the specs of the stock cam...

your prolly gonna have to take the front end off your car, unless your pullin the motor, which i doubt you are. you will needs to take off all the accesories and stuff off the front of the motor, remove the radiator, bumper and then you can slide it out through the fornt of the nose i beleive. thats why the vertical support bar is off center of the car, for a cam swap. thats mostly the main stuff then the things u need to actually take the cam out and put in a new one, loosen rockers and remove pushrods and lifters. If you find a good tech article it should help u most of the way.

That is a myth, you do not have to take the front end off to change the cam in a 4th gen F-Body.

the front bumper does not need to come off. the radiator and air condensor do however. the intake manifold will too because the lifters cannot be removed with it installed. the heads dont necessarily have to though.

Their is a very big difference between changing the cam and rebuilding the internals.

for a recomendation on cams the best thing to do is call a cam manufacturer they have r&d departments to figure out what works best
