Super Charger VS Turbo Charger

Which one do you prefer and why?

imported_Kyle 11-21-2004 11:39 AM

It actually depends on the car. If i had a v6 i would throw a supercharger in it. If i had a v8 i would throw either in it. I personally dont have a favorite but i do like the sound of a big turbo winding up! :P

camaro_chic17 11-21-2004 01:41 PM

I chose a supercharger because you don't have to wait for it to spool up like a turbo, but both are nice.

robluvs2xlr8 11-21-2004 02:12 PM

Twin Turbo, this lessens the lag that turbos create, in addition for the ability of more horsepower.

97z2801ss 11-21-2004 02:22 PM

Smaller turbo and a huge turbo would be fun, But i do like them blowers:)

NoRiceInside 11-21-2004 02:33 PM

if money was not an issue, turbo by far. however superchargers are always an easier intall and i think they dont create as much boost as a turbo, so they'd be safer and require less tuning...correct?

niceroc 11-21-2004 03:17 PM

thats pretty close to what i thought

FORCE_FED_Z 11-21-2004 05:15 PM

There have been several debates as to what is better- supercharger or turbo. Both have their benefits and both have down sides.

A turbo does have lag, but so does a charger somewhat. Turbos are capable of creating more boost, but a charger can be made to make just as much boost, its just not as common to see as a turbo making.

One downside to a turbo is that you need to have cool-down time when you are done drving to make sure you don't hurt the turbo unit. That would be an annoyance to me having to make sure I let the car idle for a minute before I turned it off. A supercharger doesn't need this cooldown time as they do not use hot exhaust gases.

I like both, I obviously like the 'whine' of a charger but a turbo does say power when you hear the BOV open and the whistle they make as well.

As far as tuning goes, both need a fair amount of tuning to make the optimum power. I can't say which is easier to tune, but both of them do need aftermarket tuning to be safe and to make power.

Just buy a turbo timer and you won't have to worry about it. It even decides how long to run the car by how you were driving.

NoRiceInside 11-21-2004 07:18 PM

sure it does...whatever you say chad... ;)

Don't be gay :eekk:

My brother has one on his Eclipse so I know what I'm talking about.

I didn't vote because I'd be happy with either and it's really up to what you're building and what your personal prefrences(sp) are.

NoRiceInside 11-21-2004 08:07 PM

lol :D

69z-28 11-21-2004 08:41 PM

yea, this kid i know has a TSI talon with an upgraded turbo and some other drivetrain mods, and as far as tuning for his turbo goes he has a turbo timer and boost controller and hes never had problems with it and its pretty ******* fast too!

archemedes 11-21-2004 09:45 PM

turbo uses too much plumbing for me

viper04af 11-27-2004 06:14 AM

umm
turbo lag is way over rated.

tiago just put a T-70 on a stock 3.8 and it is fooly spooled to 7PSI at 3000 RPM. i don't know of any SC that can make 7 PSI at only 3k rpm
that car put down 330 RWHP for a 3.8L !!!

the t3/t4 basic kit he sells spools at like 2300-2500 rpm

the one t66 kit that FF put out there spools at 2800- 3000 rpm (biult 3.8 motor)

a turbo will make 1-2 psi while it spooling soon as the shaft hits that sweet rpm the boost is THERE. the guy with the t66 has his on 15psi, at 2600-2700 he may only have 1-2 pis at 2800-2900 it spike to 15psi and holds there he lets off the gas

while a turbo is more complicated with piping i think they have less matainance then a SC, and you don't have to worry about the belt sliping.... and other things

its really what you perfer but i think turbos make more power for the power the use to make it.

IMHO turbo is the way to go for a V6, the turbo cars are putting down way better numbers then the SC 3.8s are

TorqueDog 11-29-2004 12:53 AM

I like turbochargers.

A turbo system can be constructed for far less than a supercharger kit can be purchased, and has greater potential. You can turn a knob and increase your boost, rather than waiting the week or two for the smaller boost pulley for the S/C.

Plus, with a supercharger, you always hear a little bit of whine (unless it's one of those **** Powerdynes)... with a turbocharger, you don't hear much of anything until you open'r up. Greater potential as a sleeper.

FORCE_FED_Z 11-29-2004 06:11 PM

Some of us like our whine...

tiago is awsome with his turbos on those v6s!

I think it depends on the car of what better I guess. Example: My brothers old GSR has both turbos/chargers out for it and the jackson racing supercharger is way better then most of the turbos out for it. Then again with a turbo you can control your boost level. I dunno I see and know more about turbos then a charger. IMO Superchargers do sound better. Unless the turbo has a good BOV.

fbird42 11-29-2004 07:00 PM

i like whine .. but i also like the sleepers :)

x2- but since people in my town already know me to have a horsepower car then I might as well make it known.

fbird42 11-29-2004 07:09 PM

let that ***** scream buddie

TorqueDog 11-30-2004 12:59 AM

Don't get me wrong, supercharger whine can make me lose it in my pants even quicker than Stef bending over to pick up a dollar bill (she's gonna get mad at me for that :p ), but where discreet performance is concerned, a turbo is great, until you open'r up, where each is just as audible as the other.

And who else has heard the Grand Nationals spool up and let off the gas? There's no BOV on those setups, the turbo just hiccups, and lets off that nice 'wheeeeee' sound.

97z2801ss 11-30-2004 01:07 AM

yea My buddy has a gn... I love them things:)

fbird42 11-30-2004 10:08 AM

whoever used to cruise highway100(wisconsin guys) .. those 3 Buick Grand Nationals .. the owners all live in my neighborhood.. They got a black 02 GT Mustang for sale if neones interested..

97z2801ss 11-30-2004 12:11 PM

naaa, BlowUawy BlewUaway and the guy with fake tags? all live in ure hood? I talked to chad i think his name is he was from heartland.

camaro94 12-02-2004 02:11 AM

i like the both for different reasons, so I can't really choose between the 2...

FORCE_FED_Z 12-02-2004 06:27 PM

I am thinkin of possibly runnin turbo's on the next project car just to expand the horizons a little bit...see what power I can make with turbos..

97z2801ss 12-02-2004 07:01 PM

On Rk2? or something else?

JimmyFrance 12-03-2004 02:24 AM

Ummm... Nitrous? Is that a choice? No lag, no limit to the HP you can make... only downside is the bottle... but you get two 15 lb bottles and it will last you quite a while!

Ok... leaving the boost guys alone, because truth be told if I could afford it, I would supercharge it and spray the hell out of it!! I just love the whine of a blower...
Plus my winter beater has a turbo with a 5 speed so if I want spool or bov, I just get in it! :D

Got a good deal on the Jetta... It's a real low payment...car and insurance are less than $200 a month
