suspension

okay i am about to drop an 550-600 hp motor into my 86 trans am. i dont know what i am going to do about the rear end. people tell me that the stock setup is not able to handle this set up. some people tell me to buy a moser rear end and some tell me to put a leaf spring rear end in. which one is best or does ne one have ne other ideas. the engine is a 355 tpi build for the strip but is still street legel, with a 350 turbo transmission also build for the strip. the rear end is holding me up.

if doinf strip running go moser, the leaf rear is horrible. A stock gm rear will not handle 600 hp reliably even a 12 bolt is stressed. (gm rears have always been considered the weakest of teh big 3 car companies) if going to the trouble of aftermarket do a 4 link setup, it's adjustable, and what the pros use

id get a 9", go to www.spohn.net, they have bolt in 9",12 bolts from moser and strange, so stock torque arm, lower controll arms, shocks and springs fit just as they would on your 10 bolt. Thats what i do and will do in the future.

you can change the angles, and also the preload so it plants the tires harder, or softer if the track is slick

there are infinatly more adjustments that can be made with a 4 link (there is a reason the fastest cars run them) the torque arm is fine for a street strip car, but if you don't plan on driving it do it right

i know a guy running high 9's with all BMR f-body suspension parts. he has a 509 big block in an 84 Z-28 with a turbo 400 and strange 12 bolt. its a track only car putting out 680 horse. id say go with a 12 bolt and adjustable peices.

Go for a nine inch, you can order a currie 9" 3rd member for like 1000 and the rest of the rear with 31 spline axles for like 1500. Look at jegs. I think it comes with the torque arm too.
