Switching Gears
Quick question. How easy or hard is it to switch from 3.73 gears to 3.42 gears? Gas is starting to lighten my pockets more and more. My car is an 98 A4 with ASR.

gears are something i personally would take to a show because they have to be installed perfect or the wear weird and stuff like that, but i know some people on here would probably do it themselves

if you have the right tools and know what your doing you can do it. i have dealt with a couple rear ends and honestly wouldn't do any work on one myself that requires removing the gears

Yeah, from what I hear on MFBA and LS1tech, it's better to swap out the whole rear end. They also say a rear end swap can be done in like 2 hours, whereas just the gears will take the whole day and special tools......
Anyone wanna swap out rear ends? I got 3.73 gears with ASR. =p

I used to swap out my 3.73's to my 4.10's just to goto the track, takes all of an hour. But yes, I agree with everyone else, if you've never done it before, or watched it done, I would not attempt it.

swapping axles to change gears is like changing engines to replace spark plugs. Take it to a shop and have it done, then you know i's right, and have a basically new rear, just don't expect a huge increase in mileage (less than 10 mpg) driving style does more for saving gas than anything (I get 26 with the gp and it's rated at 18)
