Question Transmission Question

I've been having a bit of trouble with my automatic transmission over the past couple of months. It's a 1998 V6 Camaro. The car had 105000kms on it and it started to get a leak at both the tranny seal and diff seal.(GM noticed it while they were doing my oil change) On top of that when I pulled the dipstick out to check it, it smelled a bit burnt to me. I've hardly ever pushed the car hard to do much damage to cause that I figured. But since it was still under warranty I got the seals replaced and I got the tranny flushed with a new filter put in. Now ever since that was done it sometimes will have a bit of difficulty it seems when it trys to shift around 70kms - 80kms. I can feel it kind of shake a bit and then its fine after that. I've checked the fluid and its full and doesn't smell bad. It's a bit frustrating since I thought it should run like new. Lately, I've been thinking if the transmission was to break I might just look into what it might cost to switch it to a manual 5 speed. I'm just not sure if anyone has switched a 4th gen auto to a manual, and if it is even worth it.

It might be the lock-up trying to engage on the transmission. I'm assuming that it does it when you are just cruising around-as in not running it hard?

In order to switch you are going to need to get a pedal assembly, both master and slave cyc., transmission, flywheel clutch and the possibly a new corssmember as well. Your best bet honestly would be to find a wrecked 5-spd car and buy the whole thing. That way you can get all the parts you need and have the car there to reference things as you take them off if you are not familar with how they work.

It usually happens when I'm slowly bringing it up to speed. When I take it on the highway and push it to the floor it hasn't happened that way. I'll see if that's what needs to be checked. Thanks for the info!

I believe, but I am not fore sure, that it is an electronic lock on the torque convertor. There might be a plug that you can unhook for the time being to stop it from trying to engage. It will hurt your gas mileage a little bit if you do highway driving. Now keep in mind this isn't necessarily good for it, its just a temporary solution to keep the transmission/car from shaking. I would still get it looked at before more damage is done.

Well it turns out it wasn't my transmission at all. Over the weekend I thought I would take a look at my spark plug wires and cables. On Friday I got under the car and took a look at them. When I tried to take on off the boot ripped off of the wire. I was lucky that I had already bought the new wires which are MSD's Heli Core wires, and I also picked up ACdelco's new Iridium Plugs (Part# 41-101). I spent all weekend working on my car but I'm happy that it was worth it. It runs so much more smoother and faster again and the shaking stopped. The one question I have is, why were the wires melted in a few spots and the plugs were a bit burnt with all of them being way bigger then the gap was supposed to be. Does anyone know if the spark plugs and wires have been this bad and if it's just the 3800 engines that run really hot. Thanks again.
