What's the weak point

Ok everyone that has ever picked up a car magazine knows that GM 10 bolts are weak. I was always curious what was the weak link that breaks? is it the factory ring and pinions is the the axles cause i mean if it is just one of those things couldn't you just upgrade that specific part and be a means to an end just the same as a 12 bolt??

The problem lies in the size of the differential. Because it is so small, it puts addition strain on the gears. With a larger differential you don't have that problem.

You can upgrade your differential and gears and such, but by the time you do, you are halfway to a 12 bolt. That would prolly be fine for most people, but anyone with a large amount of torque and traction can break just about anything inside a 7.5 10 bolt housing.

Hope that cleared it up a little.

also the c clips are not a good design one breaks (all that holds the axle is the clip in a small grove in the end of the axle) and the quarter panel goes away

technically speaking the real 10 bolt is strong enough for most street applications but that hasn't been used in an f body since '81 the new ones are done in inches

Strange, moser, ford 9" are all strong rear ends that can be used. Heck, if you want to do some fabricating you could use a ford 8.8". They are strong enough for what you are going to be doin I think.

By new, how new do you mean? A friend on mine had an 89 Ford with an 8.8 and was able to pull the front tires for at least the first 20 ft on 10.5 slicks- I would say that should be strong enough for most everyone on this site-

that's unusual those are c clip axles and are supposed to be fairly brittle (from my reading I worked witha couple ford fanatics for a while)not to mention the fab work would end up with teh same cost as a custom from currie or strange

so let's say i upgrade to a strange gear unit while keeping my factory posi unit and axles if i where to put a 3.73 or 4.10 in there and then upgrade my suspension so i actually get good traction will i have a problem ruining something if i'm pushing out somewhere in the neighbor hood of 400 FWHP
