Why i dont like that very much..

When i shift my 700r4 from Park to drive, the car Makes a huge jolt, with my foot on the brake. then i when i shift to reverse it jolts again, these are not firm jolts either.. whats going on? and when i shift to N with brake and let off brake and shift to D or R the car almost squaks tires, i idle at 700rpm.. i will update this tomarrow...

archemedes 08-20-2005 10:47 PM

your idle is higher than 700 rpm, get a real tach not the factory pos

RFF 08-21-2005 01:05 AM

Yeah an aftermarket tach looks good in an auto.

archemedes 08-21-2005 01:07 AM

a tach is not a shift light if you are only using for that you don't need one just put a shift light in.All cars should have full instrumentation that includes a tach

McGruff 08-21-2005 04:45 PM

slippy gears make it do that...

RFF 08-21-2005 05:24 PM

Something isn't right here, does the engine actually sound like it is running at 700 RPM?

archemedes 08-21-2005 06:27 PM

good poin does it hesitate a second then jolt?

MetalliCamaro 08-21-2005 09:52 PM

when its first started it idles alittle high and if you shift to an gear Besides N it almost Dies then revs and launches Hard in the direction shifted will spin tires if no brake applied, when the car is warm and you shift it Makes one huge Jolt in the direction shifted and you hear the rubbers or something like rubbers squak and then the car tilts a bit while in that gear you can feel the car isnt sitting straight, i have lower control arm bushings, will these help? And for rpm, I am quite positive it was 7 or 800rpm, i was waiting for someone and i was bored and i was looking at the rpm and i really think it was 7 or 800 and it was very warm at this time.. i might have had the car in drive, cause this someone was running into the post office and right back out.. about 5 minutes...

McGruff 08-21-2005 10:54 PM

Gears are slipping. Rebuild the tranny.

MetalliCamaro 08-21-2005 11:05 PM

um to add to before when going up hill it shifts down smooth the first time, but then it shifts down lower gear and it acts like i let off the gas shifted down and punched it, but ive never done anything like that, ive always babied it.. and if i do need a rebuild how and where would you suggest and how much will it cost? just a rough estimate would work i guess, i'd think theres people here who have had their tranny rebuilt...

imported_blade 08-22-2005 02:27 AM

i'd check the fluid levels first...
but it's probably time for a rebuild.

MetalliCamaro 08-22-2005 10:05 AM

alright i got to go to the post office pretty quik, and i will check the level of the fluid when i get home, You dont think its time for tranny fluid filter change, do you? well i will see if it smells burnt or something...

MetalliCamaro 08-22-2005 10:23 AM

Hey i am looking into needing tranny rebuild to see how much it would cost i am not rich, but someone will have to do it for me i think.. ive never rebuilt a tranny, i got the new yearone catalog and they got something called Valve body performance improver kits, Reduces shift time, provides more positive shift in every gear. kit includes seperator plate, springs, check balls, pan gasket, installation hardware and instructions for 31.00. plus shipping and all of that Bs

Then they have a tranny filter that i can mount outside the tranny uses a filter like the the stock engine oil filter, but it filters through the cooler lines, but i bet that its filtering what has been through the pump already, and parts of the tranny??? which matters?? I think it might but i am not an expert on tranny's

archemedes 08-22-2005 11:04 AM

I don't rebuild my trans either (I have done a couple it wasn't fun) the shift improver kit won't help you, and year one is high on it (they are high on everything) only use one from the company transgo. if the filter is clogged it can do strange things so changing the fluid won't hurt.that external filter I'm not sure if it works or not I looked at it once too

MetalliCamaro 08-22-2005 09:29 PM

I have a 700r4 i think... but this is what i need? i like the sounds of it.. but can i use the stock shifter?

archemedes 08-22-2005 09:31 PM

sounds like it, my real question is has the sun gear been upgraded that's the weak point in the 700

MetalliCamaro 08-22-2005 09:57 PM

Sun gear, okay whatever that is, um i am not sure whats been done to the car i just bought it in may, and they had just put a 350 under the hood, had 20,000miles on it, i havent put more than 1500 miles on the car yet.. and it had a 305 before the New rebuilt 350, so it could be that the tranny is rated for a 305, and the car has 175,000 miles on it, but its in exc. Shape for its age!

archemedes 08-22-2005 10:27 PM

the origianl 700 r4's used a very weak sun gear (it's the main gear basically) it broke very often even behind the v6, a failing pump can also cause strange things

97z2801ss 08-22-2005 11:17 PM

yep, as arch said. But the 700r4 is a good transmission! Not to hard to rebuild as long as u take ure time and remember how everything came out you'll need a few specialty tools aswell. is it just in the 1 - 2 shift? the clutch packs could be weak aswell, my 4l60e went and I lost 1,2,3,4 and R only had OD i guess...1ce 1 part starts to go if not taken care of the rest will soon follow

MetalliCamaro 08-22-2005 11:31 PM

i am going to Advance Auto tomarrow and then is there any special type of filter or fluid i should get that isnt Too expensive? But will Help with shifts?

MetalliCamaro 08-22-2005 11:32 PM

Oh yea advance auto rebuilds trannys too i think...

archemedes 08-22-2005 11:46 PM

standard fluid and filter works fine, teh special stuff hasn't impressed me too much (synthetic may help, but I haven't seen a difference)

MetalliCamaro 08-22-2005 11:50 PM

Okay, thanks Alot Guys!!! I am really glad i can ask people who have a decent idea of whats going on and what to do! and not have to pay someone 30bucks to hook up a diagnostic computer to tell me it needs fluid filter change! that really helps me out! Thanks again!

97z2801ss 08-22-2005 11:52 PM

the synthetic just lasts longer thats all and them Fixit's in a can are bogus... norml fluid and filter will be fine. when u change the filter look for metal shavings. Also, if the trans is new the fluid should be up 2 par

MetalliCamaro 08-22-2005 11:53 PM

if its new it should be where?

archemedes 08-22-2005 11:54 PM

should be ok

97z2801ss 08-22-2005 11:54 PM

if ure trans is rebuild when they rebuilt it there should be all new fluiids in it already

MetalliCamaro 08-22-2005 11:54 PM

Oh and i was thinking, how many quarts do i need? 4-5? 700r4 with OD

97z2801ss 08-22-2005 11:55 PM

and a new filter if it was a reputable shop or anyone with knowledge them 2 things hsould be brand new

97z2801ss 08-22-2005 11:55 PM

i think the spec is 4 or 4.5 but dont quote me on that

MetalliCamaro 08-22-2005 11:55 PM

Oh okay.!.

McGruff 08-23-2005 10:03 AM

sorry but if your fluid level is so low that its causing your car to "clunk" into gear, you've ****** your tranny. Don't waste your money into changing all the fluids cause you'll have to do it again once you rebuild...

MetalliCamaro 08-23-2005 10:17 AM

I was going down at 11 or so and i am going to check the fluids,

MetalliCamaro 08-23-2005 10:33 AM

I think it needs a filter, i checked the fluid level, i just started it and it read WAY above full and theres silicone on the dip stick, some hasnt came off and then some was on the bottom of thie stick that slid right off with the fluid, well i cleaned the dip stick and then checked it again and it was way above full... well, my engine oil dipstick is the same way, i added did a oil changed my oil 5quarts and it was above full like 1/2inch, but its marked for full now, i made my own mark... maby the tranny is the sameway...

97z2801ss 08-23-2005 10:36 AM

look for metal shavings..when u drop the pan

aarontracy 08-23-2005 05:47 PM

i didnt read the entire thread but when i first got my car it was doing that.. i replaced the throttle position sensor and it fixed the problem. but mine was running high rpms at the time so i wouldnt promise thats ur problem.

97z2801ss 08-23-2005 05:57 PM

Why I installed my BBK TB. the car idled right at 2grand all the time. I asked my teacher what it could be and the electronic side of the TB couldt be adjusted but the throttle body cable side could theres a little screw thing and we just backed it in till it idled at 900 rpm. the tb came off a S/C z28 thats prolly why.

MetalliCamaro 08-23-2005 08:56 PM

1. Some plans came up this morning, i didnt get to go to Advance Auto i will thursday.. but not driving the car till then But, Ive had problems with the TP... my car sometimes will rev up and down and up and down for a while... anyway how much is a TP? i will do both of these.. if i can afford it LOL..
