I guess I just don't understand why people don't have secured connections. You need like a twenty character password to get onto our account. I don't want to pay for other people's internet.

I don't have mine protected but my closest neighbor is too far away to get signal (I use my pocket PC in the car in the driveway, and lose it before leaving the driveway)

its because your general person that is told needs a router will go buy a cheap one, hook it up, and most are preconfigured to go. So they dont bother to enter a password, or even know they need one.

not to mention most of the password protected ones are pretty easy for someone to break into (my father in laws had a password and I hacked into it in a couple minutes not knowing what I was doing, and it's a d link) noone can get my computer stuff off my router since I don't share anything (remote desktop has been permanently disabled on my system) really all teh password does is keep someone else off your router, important in an apartment, but a waste of time if in a free standing house (I'd notice the guy standing in my yard pretty quick)

It used to be known as "dumpster diving" now its "yard standing with a laptop and wireless transceiver". I get a funny image when I think about that.

But, if you do live in a very rural area... wardriving still does exist.

yeah haha, even when they set a password, 'password' or 'admin' is usually a good guess.

and they have to park out front to use it, not a real issue sinc ethey just use a little bandwidth, and since I have comcast when they see a big draw on a customers end they shut the whole thing down (my brother in law loves to play games while downloading stuff, we call comcast after it goes off and they tell us they shut it down)

thats pretty 3rd world. I have comcast and I downloaded and played games like crazy... I maxed out my connection a lot, and they never did anything. I also live in a huge city tho.

I live in Mobile which is the 2nd largest county in Alabama, we have 4 computers on our connection so if all are running it's a big drag (checking with teh reporting companies we connect faster than 90% of the other comcast customers)

Thats still weird. Between me and my roomate, both of us would download and be playing games, and we never had any issues. Whats your connection speed?
