34,000 Ont. Gov't. Employees Earn More Than $100,000
Here's a riddle for taxpayers:
What do a Sunnybrook Hospital nurse, some Toronto District School Board employees, the CEO of Ontario Power Generation, a former CEO of Hydro One, and more than 140 employees of the scandal plagued Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation have in common?
Give up?
All of them make over $100,000 a year. And all of their salaries come from taxpayer money.
The province has released its annual list of people who make more than you do - and get paid out of the public purse. And this year, those people number more than 34,000, an increase of 6,000 from 2005.
Not everybody objects to the high salaries.
Governments have to pay out big money in order to attract the best and brightest.
But the presence of so many has some taxpayers wondering if at least a few on the so-called Sunshine List are being overpaid.
Especially the people at lottery headquarters.
Former OLG CEO Duncan Brown, who many believe was forced to take the fall for allegations some lottery retailers were cheating winners, made a whopping $365,000 last year.
"It's a disgrace, an absolute disgrace," condemns Ed Myers. "It's got to be cleaned up, definitely."
For those who work with the poor, it's too much for too few.
"We have all this fuss about capping sports athletes' salaries and yet government officials, what about them?" wonders Danny Anckle of Central Neighbour House. "And this is public money."
Also on the list is a man who not only raised money but eyebrows. In fact, he earned the most of anyone in the entire province.
He's Hydro One's Tom Parkinson, who resigned after an auditor questioned his odd business expenses. He pulled in $1.69 million and earned another $3 million golden parachute when he was pressured out.
Ontario Power Generation boss Jim Hankinson drew $1.48 million in current currency, good for second place.
And another man in 'power', Dave Goulding, who runs the province's Independent Electricity System Operator, plugged in $1.2 million.
After that, the numbers deflate. Howard Weston was fourth on the list. The Ontario Energy Board honcho cashes a paycheque worth $650,000.
And it's apparent energy personnel have the power to pull down the biggest numbers. A whopping 5,550 workers who toil for OPG made more than 100-grand last year. Another 1,800 were working at Hydro One.
That aforementioned nurse is an angel of mercy for just $139,000. "That's a lot of overtime, that's what it is - overtime," declares fellow nurse Corrine Graham, who doesn't make anywhere near that much.
But it appears hospital executives and school teachers also earn healthy money.
There are at least four higher-ups at city hospitals that make over $500,000, while dozens of elementary and secondary school teachers have surpassed the $100G's mark.
Other names you might know? Try Premier Dalton McGuinty, who pulled down $147,919.09 for running the province. And former Education Minister Gerard Kennedy, whose $119,241.09 was the same as other cabinet ministers.
Perhaps the biggest surprise on the list, though, wasn't the people in the back offices. It was three plumbers and a guy who fixes the windows at local schools for the Toronto Board. All of them earn more than $100,000 for their efforts.
And that's enough loonies to drive some loony. "I'm changing my profession," exclaims one taxpayer, as she surveys the final roster.

So what... most of those people have pretty serious jobs and most of them deserve their salaries. I'm actually surprised that Dalton McGuinty only makes $150k... I would have thought he made a LOT more then that. $100k isn't even *that* much these days...
Sounds to me that the author of the article is just pissed off that he/she's working their *** in some entry level journalist position making $30k a year.

Yeah what they don't mention is everything that the window guys responsible for to earn that $100,000+ a year. I doubt he sits on his *** all day until a window needs replacement. Nor do they mention if his base salary is $100k, or if its something like $60k and he just worked his *** off the entire year to earn $40k+ in over-time.
This journalist might has well of just said Dalton McGuinty, who makes $150,000, is only responsible for talking to people and signing papers and stuff .

There's really no point in argueing about wether or not government employees earn their money or not. Lets face it, I know a few people at my job, that make more than me, and don't work as hard as I do. However, there's no way I'd want their job, sitting behind a desk all day, pushing papers, and making sure my paycheck is in my bank. I don't care what you say or do, people who sit around and **** the dog, get found out eventually. Wether they work for the government, or where ever. If you don't earn your way, there are people who are willing to work, and take your place. It just takes longer, when they are elected officials.
