Apprenticeship

So basiclly I've decided to drop everything... And go into an apprenticeship.
So I've looked into sites here and there.. But I'm still confused as to how to become a mechanic apprentice. Are there any apprentices here on this site? How did you become one? Maybe an employer seeking an apprentice?(hint)
I hear you can do one year at sheridan and they find you and apprentiship or something... But I know there has to be a better school for this specificly.

Any help would be great.

I dont want to be a critic . But really unless your going to work at a BMW , or M/ Benz dealer or go into owning your own business . Go do something else . If you are smart go be a lawyer , doctor . Even a custodian at a college or university .
Heres the benefits of being a technician . No medical , eye, dental . No pension plan . You gotta buy tools that your only gonna use 3-4 maybe 5 times . Your gonna have to get training updates . Your boss wont supply you with even the same info that you can get at partsource .
You,ll be asked to work on lunch regularily , stay late cause ganishnu gijgivits cab with 480 k,s on it blew a tranny line and he needs it to make a living . Your wife and kids wont mind eating without daddy again will they.
If your interested in cars , thats good . Your better off to keep it as a hobby , and go get a job that can support that hobby and pay for a nice house .
When you gotta work on cars all day , then come home and work on your own . You,ll grow to hate it . First goes the hobby , now your stuck with a carreer you dont like . Viscious circle and it sucks .
Heres an example . Me fully licenced truck coach , and car tech since 91 . no benefits other then a paycheck at the end of the week . 1.5 yrs an my house is paid for . I have a 50 chevy pick up , a trans am for the ol lady and a model a hot rod unfinished and my street car .
My friends son , went straight from highschool to being OPP. He is 7 yrs younger then me . House paid for long ago . He,s been wounded on the job and hit by another cruiser on the job , nothing seriuos but he,s gonna have a retarded pension when he,s done . Him and another cop have a side business of restoring southern muscle cars
In 5 to 7 yrs hes, gonna retire , live off his pensions and spend the rest of his life redoing muscle cars .
I,ll still be working on cars till I,m 65 .Then I,ll live off the canada pension and the property income I,m working on .
Try a site called Canadian Technician for advice on jobs ..77.

^This guy knows what he is talkin about! My father owns a shop with 5 techs and the 3 that are older tell me im crazy for wanting to be a mechanic. I at least did the half smart thing and became a vehicle tech in the army( Full Benifits, good pension and i will be retired by 45 if i stay in. to be a tech in the civi world kinda actually sucks and you have to constantly update i mean if you stand back and look at it a good mechanic is prolly more skilled than a doctor. The human body haasnt changed in thousands of years and it wont for a long time where as vehicles change every year and will continue too and makeing things you needed to know obsolete. If you are in love with cars like I am and many other ppl on here are as well, Keep it as a hobby you will get far more enjoyment out of the hobby if you dont work on cars all day and then come home and work on your own.(which never usually happens because the mechanics car is the last to be fixed).

I'm a 3rd year apprentice...get out while you still can lol! I got into the trade because I like cars and what not and figured I would be doing what I like day to day, now I hate cars. Haha, I wish I would have kept it a hobbie and found someting else to do. The plus side is that I have learned ALOT over the few years I've been working and I get parts at cost, but really turning wrenches sucks man. You will constantly be asked to do favours from your friends and family members, and now its to a point form where I work all day then go home to help someone with their car and repeat all week. Its like owning a pickup truck, everyone becomes your best buddy when they need to move...for me everyones my best buddy when they need something done to their car.

I did my schooling at Mohawk in Hamilton, very good teachers there. And as far as getting signed as an apprentice I did that when I was still in highschool, did a program called OYAP, so I did my first year of training when I was in highschool. I really don't know how to go about getting signed on as an apprentice, I got lucky and my highschool did all the work for me

But seriously, good luck and hope everything works out.

Vdubracer , how did you go about getting in forces . Are you a civilian tech . Base Borden is supposed to be looking for 2 civilian techs next year . I,m thinking about trying it out .
I could do 15 yrs and still be before retirement age . When you start there do you have to go thru that trial period or contract thing .
I actually have a guy I know who got in as a civilian tech , he loves it . I just cant remember what his last name is , so I cant ask him ..77.
