Asking How to

Hey all
Does anybody know how to switch off the data execution prevention feature in Windows XP?

I wouldn't recommend disabling it completely.

To disable it on a per-program basis:
1. Click Start, right click My Computer. Select Properties.
4. Click the Advanced tab.
5. In the Performance area, click Settings.
6. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.
7. Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select
8. Click Add.
9. The open dialog box will open. Browse and select your application.
10. Click Open
11. Click Apply
12. Click OK
13. Reboot

To disable Data Execution Prevention completely:
1. Click Start, and then right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and in the Startup and Recovery area, click Settings.
4. In the System Startup area, click Edit.
5. In Notepad, find where it reads /noexecute=**** (where **** is whatever the setting reads currently).
6. Replace the policy level (for example, "OptIn" default) with "AlwaysOff" (without the quotes). Your boot.ini file switch should now read:
/noexecute=AlwaysOff
7. In Notepad, click File and then click Save.
8. Click OK to close Startup and Recovery.
9. Click OK to close System Properties and then restart your computer.

You can also use the MSCONFIG utility to edit the boot.ini file. This setting does not provide any DEP coverage for any part of the system, regardless of hardware DEP support.

so what does it do?

Data Execution Prevention helps prevent damage from viruses and other security threats that attack by executing malicious code from memory locations that only Windows and other programs should use. This type of threat causes damage by taking over one or more memory locations in use by a program. Then it s and harms other programs, files and even your e-mail contacts. DEP monitors your programs to determine if they use system memory safely. To do this, DEP software works alone or with compatible microprocessors to mark some memory locations as "non-executable". If a program tries to run code, malicious or not, from a protected location, DEP closes the program and notifies you.

DEP can take advantage of software and hardware support. To use DEP, your computer must be running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later, or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or later.
