That's why you listen and feel for the power band to finish, and don't over rev. I've never blown a motor. Yet.

I agree, it would be nice to have an engine slow enough that you can feel it fall out of the power band, but for those of us that don't drive VWs, we don't have this luxury!

I was talking about over revving by misshifting. I've never done this yet, but I know there are people who accidentally go into 3rd instead of 5th from 4th gear. With the rotary, you don't have to worry about floating a valve and having your piston tops introduce themselves to your valves...

Yeah, well, I've missed a shift or 2, however, I caught it in time. Never done the 4th to 3rd though. Seen it done though.
I've seen the damage a VW 16v motor can do through valve float, and it's generally terminal, or at least very expensive. I've got a 16v head here, that for some reason is missing a few valves, but fortunatley I got it for free, for the block.
