CARMICHAELS -- A teacher at Carmichaels Area High School was arrested Monday and charged with beating a dog to death with a masonry hammer.
James R. Hines Jr., 49, of 122 Old Ferry Road, Crucible, was arrested by Cumberland Township police and charged with misdemeanor charges of cruelty to animals and tampering with physical evidence.
Hines is a 28-year employee of the school district and is an industrial arts, technology, drivers education and photography instructor. He has been on sabbatical since Dec. 8.
District Superintendent Jim Zalar declined to comment on the matter.
Police allege Hines beat his girlfriend's 11-month old English Springer Spaniel to death about 4:30 p.m. Sunday at his home.
Hines went to his back yard where the dog, named Spirit, was chained to a dog box and began to beat the animal with the hammer, police said. Neighbors who heard the dog whimpering and saw Hines beating it called police.
"It doesn't surprise any of us," police Sgt. Craig Miller said Tuesday. Miller said police have had several minor run-ins with Hines including a public drunkenness arrest that occurred within the last three years.
A previous girlfriend has a protection-from-abuse order against Hines. According to court records, Hines allegedly choked the woman and threatened to kill her May 18 at his home.
Two other orders also had been filed against Hines by other women but have since expired.
After killing the dog, Hines dragged the animal to his pickup truck, threw it in the bed of the truck and drove away, police said. Police said they have not yet recovered the animal's remains. The investigating officer, Lt. George Lewis, could not be reached for comment.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call police at 724-966-8296.
Hines was arraigned before District Judge Glenn Bates of Franklin Township and released on 10 percent of a $5,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Jan. 25.

Yes, he was my (and Ryan's) shop teacher. He threathened Ryan numerous times while he was still in school, and once Ryan graduated and was 18, Hines used to run his mouth around Carmichaels telling everyone "Now that he {Ryan** is 18, I can kick his ***, and not have to worry about him being a minor" and things likto that effect. Always talking about what he was gonna do to Ryan soon as he saw him. I can honestly say, it would have been the last mistake he'd have ever made. He ran his mouth, but never actually did anything cause everyone knows Ryan is a little nuts. And usually armed.

No, trust me Ryan is a little crazy. lol If he wouldn't have injured his wrist, his job was going to be killing people professionally for the military, in one special unit or another. And he's armed with more than a knife. Right now he has a Bersa .380 (sort of like my Walther PPK/S).
