Hawaii...

Question for you Amurrrrricans out there.

I want to know about the state of Hawaii. Particularly, what areas are desirable to live, and what areas are really not that great. What are some quirks of the area? Anything one would need to take into account should they relocate there?

I don't think we have any members from Hawaii, but it'd be nice find out anyway.

Thanks.

I plan on getting stationed out there before I get out of the military, I know a few people that have been there and they loved it.

Amurican, thats me. Well, Oahu and Maui are the most touristy and I heard that the big island and Kailua are the better less touristy places to live. And about quirks, I've heard a lot about the locals not being fond of the cliche tourist... especially towards beginner surfers and generally ignorant people... I know you don't have to worry about that now, do you Dr. Torkdog?

Well, I was born there.... And you wouldnt want to go there and settle in.. its not that easy.. Theres Places Gated/Fenced off and if you Cross that.. Theres Some Vietnam Veterans that live out there. They seem to think they are in Vietnam still. Ive never been passed them fences, But ive heard of people getting shot. Most real Hawaiians are not all that easy to get along with. Its not a Place for outsiders to settle..

Believe it or not, TDU didn't incite the idea so much as rekindle an old idea. Although it made its own changes.

A couple months ago, a relative of mine told me about a guy he worked with who just decided to fück off one day and live in the Dominican Republic. He sold timeshares and lived on the beach. How good can life get?

Work has been royally pissing me off lately, and I've seriously considered the option of relocating... yes, and I just moved here. The reason I'd move again is that the root of my problems at work stem from someone I work with, and unfortunately, leaving the company would not save me the torment of dealing with this individual on a day to day basis, because I am related to this person.

Why did I change it up to Hawaii? Well, partially, TDU is to blame for it, for reminding me of how beautiful that place is (I have been previously, for the record). The main reason is that it doesn't seem that far out of reach for me, and looking online, there are tons of job opportunities out there. My big issue would be securing a work visa or green card.

Rent is a bit crazy no matter which island you look at, it seems. $1000 a month gets you a studio apartment.

This wouldn't be a 'right here, right now' thing, but more of a 'year or so' thing.

The cost of living is very high out there. Real estate prices are pretty high too. Everything has to be imported, so almost all of the food is much more expensive there than it is on the mainland. I don't know how US prices relate to Canadian prices, but I'm sure Hawaii is still higher than both.
