Help Determining Car

Hey guys I'm currently saving up for my first car. And I'd really prefer a sporty 4 cylinder. I've been doing some online insurance quotes and I've come back with a few ideas. I know that insurance is gonna be through the roof regardless me being 17 and a half closer to 18 by the time I buy the car. Anyways I'm looking for a car under 5'000 grand maybe a bit over. Right now I'm currently dead set on a Mazda Miata, the only down side is its only 2 seats and I have lots of friends. I looked at the Nissan 300zx but they get pretty poor gas mileage and insurance would be nearly $100 more a month.

Another option is MK2 MR2 the 4 Cylinder Non Turbo version, but again 2 seater. Insurance quote was about $20 more a month than the Miata. If anyone could suggest a 4 seater 4 cylinder RWD sports car that for some reason I overlooked that I may haver overlooked hoping it would like it to average just more than 20MPG in the city. Both Miata and MR2 do so.

Other cars I looked at were 240SX poor mileage and $50 more a month. Honda CRX awesome milage but insurance is high because its a Honda. Looked at 2DR 318Ti BMW insurance was over a $100 a month more than the MR2.

For the Miata I was quoted $335/Month plus it gets good mileage. I'm buying the car at the end of the summer gonna work on it and put some upgrades into it before hitting the road so thats at least another 4+months of driving experience and in 8 months from now I will be getting my full G license so I should expect a %30 decrease so I've heard. It will be mainly used to drive to school as I live in Beaches and I am switching to another school next year which is closer to downtown. Not really worried about snow, just through some weights in the trunk, it's always plowed and salted on the roads I'd travel.

Thanks for any help.

P.S. Don't need a big car, right now I can drive and borrow my parents cars which are 2006 Honda CRV and gas guzzling 2007 Nissan Quest that can handle friends. Rather have a small sporty economical car that is fun then go by TTC. $100 bucks a month on TTC pass have no real expenses might as well put it to insurance + my friend said she'd pay for gas if I gave her a ride as opposed to TTC, as we've both switched school.

Not looking for FWD cars. Looking for RWD would love a Porsche 944 but insurance seems to be high even though it's a small 4 banger. Would really love a 300ZX if I could get decent insurance on it like $350 a month and under. Mind you 6 months after I get car I will be getting full G so insurance should then drop dramatically. Can anyone on this website give me some free quotes on a couple cars or advise me on what RWD sports cars are cheapest to insure for teens.

300zx is going to be pricy on the repairs due to tight engine bay. Its also a sports car which is higher insurence than a 4dr or hatches. Find a nice 240zx if you really want rear wheel drive. But the best solution is to buy an econo car cause insurence will nail you cause your a guy and your young. What if by mistake you get a ticket and that 350 insurence just became 550? i bought a brand new 04 Civic SiR when i was 18 but when insurence quoted me 600 a month, so i returned it fak that.Insurence is a rip dont fall into their trap.

True, I think 300ZX is out of the question. I've been using Kanetix: Car Insurance Rates, Auto Insurance Quotes Instantly Online for Canada and the US. Get car insurance rates online at Kanetix from top insurers to compare and save! for insurance quotes to get a rough idea.

1994 Mazda Miata $325.00
1993 Nissan 300ZX $404.00
1995 Nissan 240SX $392.00
1993 Toyota MR2 $348.58
1993 Mustang LX $374.58
1993 Toyota Supra $396.58

I did all those on Kanetix the Supra was just to compare another 6 cylinder car to the rest. As you can see Mazda Miata and Toyota MR2 seem to be the cheapest to insure. I got quotes for civics but they all were around price per month as a Mustang because of he high theft rate, which really sicks cause CRX is one of the few FWD I'd really care for. I think the older cars are cheaper to insure as you mentioned with your civic it was worth more so they wanted you to pay more insurance etc.

I think I'm just probably just gonna go with a Miata its seems cheap to inure, lots of parts available, reliable, sporty, lots of after market, all I'm compromising is the lack their of extra seats.

Yes I'm a guy and I'm young insurance is gonna screw me, and I'd rather they screw me in a cheap to afford sports car. Most cars I quoted were in the $300-$400 range a month I'd like closer to $300. Even Econo boxes were all up at $375 and such.

I don't think I can be under parents and be a primary. I know friends who piggy back and I wanna be legit because if they get caught they're ****ed. They're families have only 2 cars and their mom doesn't drive so they get secondary on that car and drive it to school every day. That would make them a primary driver.

The only real FWD cars I'd be down for would be down for would be like a Honda CRX but again insurance is more expensive on Hondas even Civics were more then the Miata, but RWD is much cheaper to repair.

Like I said I'm really not to concerned about winter driving, this winter was different but generally for the past 5 years before their was only really snow 3 Months. Only time RWD wouldn't be all that great would be if it really snowed a big snow fall that case I could take parents car. City streets especially where I'm driving are always salted and are dry a good % of the winter. I've also heard that Miata does amazing with a good set of REAL winter tires, I've seen pictures of them ice racing in street legals.

BUMP, Anyone know if I get an 80's car and I can then be insured as classic car insurance. Would even if it only brought it down a bit it might bring it down to some of the newer cheaper family sedan insurance rates.

I'm comprising a list of cars for my dad to go to insurance company with soon for quotes, he's gonna see if the car is under his name and have me as primary will bring it down but probably not because my family would then have 3 cars and 3 drivers.

My List So Far

Honda CRX
Mazda Miata
Mustang LX (4 Cylinder)
MR2

CRX looks to be best bet as its super good MPG. Pretty nice looking, I can drop in the JDM rear bench just to have that ability to carry around 3 people. Lots of cheap aftermarket parts. And the cars can be found pretty cheap on kijiji

Guess I'll wait and get RWD later on like a Honda s2k  , just won't be able to for a while. Not this summer but next I graduate grade 12 get out of high school and I'm gonna be working full time for a year. I wanna make enough for a down payment on a house before I go to University so in that time period I won't have much to spend on cars, So I'd like to do all the car stuff this Winter.

With most places you usually have to be a certain age before you're allowed go under "classic".

Your list as it is seems ok, considering what you want. Good call just getting anything that is cheap, has 4 doors, and is FWD. Wait until you have a little bit of experience behind the wheel before you want to start buying nicer cars. You can still get yourself in plenty of trouble with a FWD 4 banger, but the money you'll be saving in insurance, gas, maintenance will be much more beneficial once youre saving to buy a much nicer car in the near future.

Also, i'm not sure if its been mentioned yet... but when you get your G in 6 months, your rates won't change all that much. You're still a young male driver, so you're extremely high risk in their eyes, no matter what class your license is. Welcome to Ontario auto insurance!

I guess I didn't mention this before I wanna get into like racing at events no street racing bull thats dumb. But wanna get into Autocross maybe drift like no ricer BS. Now that I think of it I can probably just pick up a beater CRX for winter and Daily Driver. Then come fall get a Miata cause prices should be down because of off season and Garage it for the winter work on it and fix it up with theft and fire under my Dads Name.

P.S. Thanks for the advice deebz, got any pics of your 300zx love the way those cars.
