Lucky day...

I was on a service call to install a wireless router at a customer's apartment the other day. While walking back to my truck, I noticed a small black object in the ice, that looked kind of like a car stereo remote. So imagine my surprise when I kneel down to see a black iPod nano stuck in the ice. It must have been under there for months.

Will it work? Water kills electronics, particularly if they encountered water while powered on, and it had been melting a fair bit in the city for a number of days now.

I shrug, and take my trusty Jeep key, dig the iPod out of the ice, and throw it in my truck. I get back to work, and use a lightly damp cloth to clean it off, and then put it near a heat vent to let it dry. It stays there for two days.

One of the boys in the office has an iPod, so he offers to bring in his USB cable, so I can see if it works, as the battery has long since died.

I download iTunes, let it install, then hold my breath and plug in the iPod. I see a black screen with an Apple logo in the middle. Ta-da! But it doesn't seem to have a backlight. I figure it must have gotten damaged, but it's not a big deal.

iTunes mounts the iPod perfectly, and I see this iPod used to belong to some girl. The copious amounts of "Ashlee Simpson" in the playlist tips me off to this fact. So I rename the iPod, and wipe off all the songs.

So without spending a dime, I've joined the world of iPod ownership.

Oh, and I forgot to mention... this is the 8 GB iPod nano... the one Best Buy wants $300 CAD for.

Epilogue: I ran a Google search on water-damaged iPod nanos, to find that there is one guy who willingly put his nano through a washing machine. He allowed it to try and it worked just fine afterwards. So if you spill something on your iPod, wipe it off immediately and allow it to dry. It might still work.

Not bad. I spent a total of 0$ on my nano too. Won it in a contest at work way back when. And yes, Ashley Simpson has never toched any part of my play list.

Yeah, I'd probably put an apple in her mouth if she started singing, but dang it, I'd bend her over my kitchen counter and give her some Canadian bacon.
