need advice orginizing street drags

This summer a few of us guys want to get some drag racing orginized in our town of about 25,000 people.
We have this August event , car show and cruise , and it usually spawns some illegal drag racing at night on the outskirts of town. This gets the cops and locals pi$$ed and gives this event a bad name.
So this year since we are going to have all these hot rods in town on this day anyway we thought lets make it legal and let everyone get it out of their system.
So does anyone have any advice or info ?

there are no such thing as "legal" street drags.

yea best thing you will be able to do is maybe have a burnout competition in a parking lot somewhere, even then... not gonna happen, otherwise we would all be hosting it

My buddy has already talked to the Mayor and he says it sounds like a good way to promote our city and bring some money to the area , so he like gave the OK but we've never had something like this before and are scracthin our heads on what to do next.
He talked to the PD and there will be cop cars racing as well. We've had auto cross racing in the college parking lot and cops have competed in that too.
( they're pretty good )

In a nutshell:

If it was up to me...i would choost a wide open remote area....somewhere that has two lanes going the same way. Section off the area that people will drag on and be sure to leave enough space for people who want to watch...some sort of barrier between the crowd and the dragway should be made to keep drunk people out of the way A flag person and someone at the end of the 1/4 to make sure the pass went ok.

NYC is about 550-600miles from here and that is an 8-9 hour drive. I have done it in 6 hours. 1100 is to far.

i still dont see this happening. when a 17 year old in a riced out crx sends their car into a post, and winds up dead, the parents will blame the organizers and people like the mayor for greenlighting such a stupid event.
as much as you would like to see this happen, someone is going to get burned...

Dude...if its a sanctioned event by the mayor and proper steps/precautions are made to ensure peoples safety then nobody in a riced out crx should be hitting a pole.

Just like down here in TDOT....the molson indy...takes place on the foken street downtown......i guess lots of them hit poles and kill themselvles cause its on the street. Fortunatley....they pre plan this stuff...just like 68 wants to do, and nobody hits poles.

yes because im sure him running this idea by the mayor once is going to have everyone sign waivers before getting to make some passes down a public street.
this is all speculation, but i honestly doubt proper planning will go into something like this

Hopefully proper planning does go into something like this, so that it could possibly open the door for other states...maybe even one day in a gagillion years some provinces too.

Actually I know that in Manitoba on Sundays people street race in thier towns and the cops are cool with it....thats what I know from someone who lives there, so I dont know if its 100% true.

The Molson Indy and drag racing at a track can't be compared to two guys going at it with a flag man on a street. The cars in the indy are driven by pros, roll-caged, helmets, harnesses, neckbraces, the streets are in perfect conditon and there are no poles to hit (streets are repaved every year). Maybe the mayor is slow enough to allow this, but he will learn when the law suit hits his office door, if he has an office. A waiver does not protect you fully from any legal action, a jury can still rule in the favour of the plantiff as can a judge; this is also the US where moronic law suits are filled on an hourly basis. Good luck if it works, but I dont see it happening, and if it does it wont last long and there is no chance of it ing to Ontario. Heck, even autocrosses in parking lots are solo and done with cones, very different from racing (you cant even pass without a signal on most lapping days at a track).

we did check into insurance and its about $1700 for one day.
were thinking 1/8 mile so speeds wont get that high .
also no nitrous and no slicks.
but hey we all got to die sometime and speed doesnt kill ,lack of control does.
