First of all you need to make sure the local police is fully co-operating in this event.

You can probably get away with using your industrial park for 1/8th mile. Have the staging area and the burnout box properly barricaded. Since I don't think this is that big of an operation, caution tape and a person as a spotter that noone goes over the caution tape is probably enough to contain the crowd for the length of the 1/8th.

Think of a return route for the racers. Tell them about it in advance and mark it out. If its possible have the return route in connecting parking lots so they don't travel in the opposite direction of the set up track.

Having a mechanic on hand to generally look over the cars would not be a bad idea, since there will probably be some cars that will scream unsafe from 20 feet.

According to you it is a small community, if possible gather the names of the local volunteer firefighters and have a rotation of 2 on duty at all times for the duration of the event. Maybe have like 2 hour shifts so they don't get bored. Pay them if you have to, they're probably worth their weight in gold if there is an accident.

Make the attendees sign a waiver. It doesn't give much peace of mind, but it's a start.

Buy the insurance. Gather support from local businesses if you have to raise money for it. You never know and it's better to be on the safe side.

Have different classes to properly match up the cars. It provides more enthusiasm if the racers are more closely matched together.

The cops are not cool with it in Manitoba.
I used to live there and sunday night is the night all the cars come out but the cops have cracked down hard. There are a few places there you can get away with it for a couple of runs but if you get caught the price is too high.

2tone , we ask that so we dont have all these seasoned bracket racers show up. This is just for street cars and show cars , daily drivers and of course cop cars.

GLI , Those are some good points especially the fire dept suggestion we never thought of asking them but now we will.

I dont mean to sound like a *****, but I dont think many of you understand State laws in the USA....State Law RULES in the USA...you cannot over rule a state law...as we all know from the Terry Shiavo case...god bless her soul.

If the mayor, or state judge rules that you can drag race on the street...YOU can drag race on the street, and no other state can say , or over rule what the state has decided. Unlike Canada...Federal Law Rules....so lets say an ontario judge said its ok to street race for a day...that can be easily over ruled by a federal judge and buh bye street racing.

I hope this works out for you 68....I think it would be a blast to have some fun with a bunch of car guys like me, talk and eat bbq all afternoon.

Good Luck

Just like down here in TDOT....the molson indy...takes place on the foken street downtown......i guess lots of them hit poles and kill themselvles cause its on the street. Fortunatley....they pre plan this stuff...just like 68 wants to do, and nobody hits poles.
your obviously not a F1 or indy fan, theres been deaths at the molson indy and that was just about 10years ago....

also who can forget senna`s death for F1. Even under track conditions or not you hit a wall at 180mph your dead

I do watch F1 and worked at the Molson Indy for 2 seasons in a row

My point was that they "raced" on public streets, and although there was a death wich is very unfortunate...1 for every 10 years isnt that bad considering other sports death rates.

This will never happen. The local goverment will NOT support using public roads to satisfy this due to liabilty issues plain and simple. What if a dumb kid kills himself or loses control of his 95whp of raging FWD fury? Who's gonna be responsible. Signing waivers mean . There is too may variables present compared to a controlled area such as a legal drag strip (i.e. concrete barriers to protect spectators, tech inspections, insurance coverage, paramedics present etc. etc. etc.

Would be nice, but you can still dream folks.

Just to clarify , we plan on using our industrial park area , there are no homes no traffic at least not on saturday , just warehouses and huge parking lots and its on the outskirts of town. We almost had the airport but there was a change of heart. I will keep you posted on how its going. I like all the input I'm getting here . Thanks
