One Big Lobster

Bubba, left, a 23-pound lobster pulled from the waters off Nantucket, Mass., is in a tank beside your average 1.5 pound lobster at Wholey's fish market in Pittsburgh, Tuesday, March, 1, 2005.

Bubba the Leviathon Lobster Dies at Zoo

PITTSBURGH (AP) - He dodged lobster pots for decades, endured a trip from the coast of Massachusetts to Pittsburgh and survived about a week in a fish market. But a trip to the zoo proved to be too much for a 22-pound lobster named Bubba.

The leviathan of a lobster died Wednesday afternoon at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium about a day after he was moved from Wholey's Market, said zoo spokeswoman Rachel Capp and Bob Wholey, owner of the fish market.

``They're very finicky. It could have been a change in the water. You have no idea,'' said Wholey.

Bubba died in a quarantine area of the zoo's aquarium, where he was being checked out to see if he was healthy enough to make a trip to an aquarium at a Ripley's Believe It or Not museum, Capp said.

Bubba will be examined to try to figure out why he died, although Capp and Wholey guessed it may have been the stress of being moved.

Based on how long it typically takes a lobster to reach eating size - about five to seven years to grow to a pound - some estimated Bubba was about 100 years old. But marine biologists said 30 to 50 years was more likely.

Other large lobsters didn't fare well after they were caught, too.

Now that, would make a nice lobster dinner....

actually it probably wouldnt be that good, it is probably alot of fat and not alot of meat. Just like the best kind of pig to have is not a big one, the smaller the better, less fat and more meat.

I think its kinda sad, something that rare and awesome died, but im sure they will find another.

Yeah I saw that on the news last night, that's one giant lobster. I wish they would've been able to transport it successfully to Ripley's and acclimate it to their aquarium, they had a large aquarium all ready for it. I wonder how much Ripley's had to pay for it.

Not necissarily true on the pig thing man..I was in FFA for 11 years and along with showing swine, I also won a number of awards for judging them...The key to prime pork is the perfect combination of lean-ness, muscle definition, and fat. And almost a marbling effect to the carcass, much like in cattle. Size is not as big of an issue as age, but of course, that's a given, almost any older animal is gonna have poorer meat.
