Police work to ERASE street racing

A motorcyclist looks on as Const. Tom Doherty inspects his bike for violations Thursday at a parking lot in Oakville.

It's a perfect night to street race.
The weather is clear and dry. The warm day has given way to a cool evening, which will enhance the performance of cars built for speed.
By dark, dozens of vehicles have gathered in the most Canadian of locales: outside a Tim Hortons at Dundas St. W. and Highway 403 in Oakville. Among them are freshly painted Honda Civics and late model Nissans hovering just millimetres off the ground, motorbikes with back licence plates tucked up under their seats, out of view, and cars that look like they're on loan from mom and dad's driveway.
"This is where guys come to show off," says a man in his 20s who, like others gathered in the parking lot last Thursday refused to give his name. But police say that among about 250 car enthusiasts who gather here on summer nights, many are street racers who put themselves – and other drivers – at risk. Bolstering their case is evidence on the streets of a light industrial area nearby: sets of skid marks and debris from a blown engine.
So, on this night, Halton Regional police are running Project ERASE (Eliminate Racing Activity on Streets Everywhere). A long-established task force of 18 police forces and the ministry of transportation, it targets street racing and aggressive drivers with blitzes.
The aim is to make street racing as socially unacceptable as drinking and driving. It comes on the heels of a recent accidents involving alleged street racers in the Toronto area.
Street racing is blamed in the deaths of 38 people in the GTA since 1999, including the June 18 death of David Virgoe, who rolled his truck into a ditch as he tried to avoid two cars allegedly racing on Highway 400 south of Bradford.
"We're just trying to send a message," said Const. Tom Doherty, a Burlington cop who spends the night in an unmarked cruiser nabbing speeders, pulling over bikers with plates hidden, and generally showing the police's presence.
"We just want to let them know that we know you're out here and we're not going to tolerate it," Doherty said. "You can either go further underground or obey the law."
But those gathered in the parking lot, said it's about harassment.
"I've (gotten) tickets just flowing along with the rest of the traffic," said one man standing near his Nissan. "I'll get pulled over because I'm 21 and I've got an exhaust system."
"If you're caught street racing, they should throw the book at you, crush your car," said his buddy, referring to threats from Attorney General Michael Bryant last month after Virgoe's death. "But to say because I've spent money to customize my car I'm a criminal, is nuts."
Another young man said he was hoping for more "creative solutions." At the top of the list: a track to race legally. The only option for that right now is Cayuga, a speedway outside Hamilton.
"They could make money on the track and reduce our taxes," he said. "But the only solution they have is blitzes and handing out tickets."

Here's a cop saying - "go further underground ". Really nice (stooopid) thing to say publically. So there ya have it folks - stop hanging out at Timmies and hang out instead at a place where no one goes, a place like Denny's, bwahahaha. And who knew that Timmies was an underground place

Enjoy the pic I made, and yes, I had a lil too much free time tonight

ill agree that it has gotten out of control, too many kids with no experience racing around on public streets. but no matter what happens this stuff will never end, itll jus tkeep moving out further out of the city and into the country, or atleast the smart ones will

They're cracking down on 403 and Dundas NOT because of street racing, but because of property damage... but you say OH 2TONE, HOW DO YOU REALLY KNOW...

well, a while back i was at a shop and ran into the property manager. He told me last year with cleanup, property damage and some other things it totaled $65,000.

So they put in large concrete blocks etc to stop people from driving over the medians and racing around.

The police are NOT there because of street racing, they are there because the owner of the property doesn't want us there.

Again, back to the same thing, they're branding us all because of a few people that street race. Should we brand all cops as wife beaters, alcoholics, children abusers ? Media is lame, they need to sell papers, bunch of bottom feeders

Anyhow, just go farther underground if thats what you're into.

agreed, no business owner wants 1000 people out of whick 50 might spend money on stuff, 150 will do burnouts, 100 will drive like dicks and speed and 1/3 of will litter. plus it drives away potential customers when they come into a parking lot full of modified cars and people acting like dicks.

at the same point i agree with you, being labelled is pretty shitty. there was a cop down in the niagara region recently that pulled over a girl coming back form a bar and in exchange for not giving her a ticket he took a *******. well she complied, gave it to him and spit the results into an empty bag which she took to the police station and she is now in a lawsuit. maybe we should label all cops like this guy.

you know a friend of mine braught up a good point about this that he used in an arguement about street racing. there have been what, 5 deaths this year blamed on street racing. how many of our soldiers have died over seas for the american war? and why? fighting for we get dragged into because the americans are power hungry.

Amen to that. Bush is power hungry. He's after the oil. Anyways, it's completely true, about how everyone with an aftermarket exhaust is grouped. I used to get pulled over all the time. 90% of the time I was driving within 5 k of the speed limit.

which is why my daily driver is an unmodified suv. mind you i havent been stopped in my car in literally 2 years now, cops in my area are pretty cool unless your doing something really stupid. i think theyve looked at me twice this year and thats about it.

but its true, bush is power hungry, that mother****er is the worst thing that could have happened and yet those stupid *** americans voted him back into power. lets make peace and go blow up

How bout things like stopping all these murders in T.O.

Street Racing "Related" Deaths since 1999 = approx. 39
Murders in T.O. this year alone = I believe they're at 50

Congratulations, police suck at their job.
