Yes , for eg. My uncle said one time that his unit ( light infantry ) was sent in too clean out an area of german soldiers in a town . Their scouts came back an said hey theres like 30 panzers ( heavy german tanks ) under netting along the banks of a little river that runs thru town. We need air support to clear those out before we can go in an kill germans . Higher ups said there is no panzers in the area , go in and clean out town. They wanted the german soldiers cleaned out by next morning , so a supply convoy could go thru area safely. So infantry is sent in and gets like 60 % losses in 24 hrs .
They retreat outta the town and the panzers follow them out into the country side , woods . Higher command , hearing of the losses sends in air support , fighter/bombers cant see any tanks in the town . Cause the tanks and soldiers are 20- 30 miles away chasing the light infantry guys . So they bomb it anyways , return to base. Mission accomplished . Higher ups were pleased that uncles units had cleared the town of the enemy , even tho there units were being chased cross country by a load a german tanks and soldiers.
Now the uncles units , on the run come across british and american heavy infantry units . Who took out after the germans and turned them back the way they came . The germans went right back thru the town , being chased and firing upon the allied convoys as they met them at the town . Yes , you guessed it , the commanders of the units my uncle was with got big time sheyitt for the enemy being in the town after they got praised for clearing them out . My uncle referred to this episode as somewhat normal , and also as fubar . The american soldiers told him they called it snafu when they were in this kinda situation ..77.
