radar detector useless if not mounted on windshield?

radar detector useless if not mounted on windshield?
I know it's illegal to use on the road and stuff. I was just wondering if they'd be completely useless if I don't mount them on windshield; whereas, I mount it lower in the center console. Would that be just a performance loss, or it wouldn't detect anything.
