Street racer says he's sorry
http://www.mississauga.com/article/13101
April 15, 2008 08:26 AM - A Mississauga man facing charges in connection with a wild highway race that ended in the death of a trucker last summer returns to court later this year after one of his co-accused pleaded guilty yesterday.
Yesterday, 20-year-old Nauman Nusrat of Etobicoke stood in a Barrie court and told Justice Gregory Regis he was "ashamed and embarrassed. I call myself a murderer, a sinner."
Nusrat pleaded guilty to criminal negligence by way of street racing causing death, driving without insurance and having forged insurance documents.
Admitting his actions were "stupid," the accused said he made a regretful mistake and begged for forgiveness. He vowed never to drive again.
Nusrat will be sentenced May 15.
Co-accused Ravi Badwhar, 21, of Mississauga and Prabhjit Multani of Etobicoke are awaiting trial. Police allege they were the drivers of the other racing vehicles.
According to an agreed statement of facts, Nusrat was one of three drivers taking 12 friends to Wasaga Beach via Hwy. 400 on June 17 last year. Witnesses speculated the three cars — a Pontiac Grand Am, a Mustang convertible and a Honda Civic — were driving as fast at 180 kilometres an hour as they weaved through traffic during a 44-kilometre race.
Just south of Hwy. 89, Nusrat struck a jeep and lost control. One of the other vehicles in the race cut in front of a truck. The truck struck a guard rail, spun clockwise and landed on its roof in the ditch.
Innisfil trucker David Virgoe, 48, was killed instantly.
Witnesses said Virgoe saved several lives by steering his damaged truck off the highway into an embankment and away from a number of other vehicles.
"His driving skill spared other drivers from inevitable collisions," said Crown attorney Karen McCleave, who applauded Virgoe's bravery.
"He was my hero," Virgoe's daughter, 29, said, weeping as she read a victim impact statement in court yesterday.
The only thing I will say is life is so precious people dont just throw it away, seriously.

this is BS...there are wayyy too manny accidents on the 400 becaus of stupid drivers (other highways as well)..me and my frineds are on this highway every day almost from barrie to toronto...ive been luckey so far and so hae my frineds and not been involved in any accidents on it, but ihave seen a lot and missed some by only seconds...there was one where i decided to take hwy 27 insted because of the weather and turned out that at the exact time i would have been at cookstown there was the biggest pileup of this winter. something like 50+ cars i think. caused by whiteouts.
others in the summer were by stupid drivers. getting on the highway backwards isnt uncommon for some reason also these racing disasters.
STOP BEING DUMB@$SES!!!!!

If you want race make sure its at the track or where nobody can get hurt except the people racing. The thing I don't understand is why isn't someone thinking big business here there is such a need for people to race create more controlled places with signed waivers where people can race. The other thing I hate is everyone believes they are such good drivers that these types of accidents wouldn't happen to them, what they never account for is the "what if" (tire blows, kids running on the street, small animals etc.)
