The computer can shift much faster than a human, therefore it equates to a faster ET. Pretty simple if you actually think about it for a second
And auto isn't faster, just QUICKER!

PS you guys are forgetting to mention that you're referring to BUILT automatic transmissions, not stock automatics, DSGs, SMGs, etc. A traditional stock automatic transmission is garbage.

^ yes you can with a high enough stall in your torque converter. An automatic car is much easier to launch as well, just brake torque and let go of the brake pedal when you wanna go. for drag racing, go auto. for road course racing, manual.

People, give your head a shake here. One is not really better then the next. Look at what most auto trans are using, a manual valve body. That should give you a clue in itself. What it all boils down to is reflexes and timing. You can miss a shift with a manual and you can shift an auto out of the engines torque range too. Both will give the same results in slow trap times and ET's. The best part about a manual is though, you can place with gear ratios with each gear to get max power from each gear. Autos don't use this type of ratio, they just have different componats to handle higher torque. They rely more on diff ratios. Samething with manuals too as you will need to get the right diff ratio according to gear ratio of the tranny and tire sizes. Why alot of faster cars don't use manuals is they break easy if not shifter properly or a misshift. As some of you will notice, manuals have scatter blankets on them, auto do to, but not until you are up in the speed though.
