PS2 Problems
#3
ps2's are crap. mine plays everygame except gt4. ive had it all apart, cleaned all the dust out. cleaned the lens, adjusted the hieght with no luck. now im down to trading with a friend that doesn't use gt4.
ill give them credit though, they do know how to make a profit making a product that fails after a few years..
if only they could make a ps2 emulator for the xbox bios.

PS2's are only as reliable as you treat them. Playing them 8 hours straight and keeping them on all night over a period of 3 years will break any household appliance.
I've had mine since 2001 and it's working perfectly. When I got GTA: SA it has a disk read error problem but it ended up just needing a cleaning.

take it from an expert on PS2's they are built like crap! You probably either have a dirty lense or a lense thats warped because it was in the first place.
Dirty Lense: CD Cleaning disk wont do squat because its not the CD lense that needs cleaning, its the DVD lense that needs cleaning witch can only be done by opening it all up and uncover the dvd lense.
Warped Lense: If the laser lense is warped then your screwd go buy a new PS2 or get an XBOX. New lense = $179 I've seen so many people get screwd buy a warped lense... over 200 easy.
Ohh and the new slim PS2 was built like crap too.... theres no ING OFF SWITCH!!!!! that thing stays on 24/7 and your lense will only last so long before it gets warped do to the heat it generates.
Tip: If you do have a PS2 try not to play a lot of dvd movies on it. If you notice when you play a game the lense is constantly moving in and out on the track. When you watch a DVD it stays in one spot moving very slowly causing to heat up and warp.

Are these ps2's modded?
What version ps2 are you running? Usually versions 1-4 are crap. Best versions are 7,9 and 10. Rarely do they ever experience disk read errors, the odd 1 or 2 V7's experience it.
BTW a new lense is $50-$60, not $180.
If it's an old version, sell the garbage on ebay without mentioning the version. Buy a v7, 9, 10 or 12 (slim). Get it modded by a guy who knows what they're doing, V9/V10/V12 all have fixes to them so you will rarely ever have any problems. I never had any problems with peoples machines anyhow.
My V9 I modded has been running strong for a while now and I have never experiences 1 DRE ever.
Use good media, and burn at slow speeds like 1 or 2X. I suggest using ridata ritek dvd-r disks.
You can attempt to clean the laser. If it still gives DRE, replace the laser or sell it for a newer version.
Good luck

They're not , problem is people are uneducated. If you compare it to xbox, then thats a different story.
The new slim does overheat and burn out when modded. But they have fixes out for them that control the laser lens coils voltage, making it very difficult to overheat and fry.
