2002 Ranger Making Clicking Sounds.

My buddy is a ref, and tried to explain to me the problems of his 2002 Ranger.

Im a little shocked that it's a 4 cylinder..but whatever.

He claims the engine is making "clicking" sounds, i cant find too many specs on the engine itself, but i need to know if it's an interference engine and what possible problems it could have before he takes it to his mechanic, cause he wants a "quote" of some kind for repairs.

I told him to check the oil, seems fine..it's at exactly 95% full..so that's ok..but im thinking the piston is slapping the valve if it is infact an interference engine.

Help him/me out.

Shot in the dark, but could it maybe be the wires arcing?, That kinda sounds like a clicking noise.

Easy way to find out... spray quick start on a wire at a time, then crank the starter.

It's also a quick way to dry leaking wires so you can get your car started in the wet.

I'm surprised no one suggested a collapsed hydraulic lash adjuster yet.

And you'd have to be REALLY close to hear a sparkplug arcing.
