clutch problems due to self adjust mech-

I just replaced the self adjusting clutch mechanism becouse it was worn making it really hard to change gears. but after installing the new one, the clutch wont work at all.
everything is replaced exactly as it was, but when you push on the clutch pedal it doesnt engage the clutch it just sticks untill the teeth on the self adjust mech slip and it goes loose. i tried unhooking the clutch cable from the tranny and the clutch pedal operates smoothly without it trying to engage the clutch. my car is in my driveway and its my transportation so im kind of screwed untill i get it fixed. any suggestions as to why its not engageing the clutch at all...?????
