you are going to have to get a diff distributor for your car need a gear out of a 85.
Only yr for roller cam and carbed.

change out your fuel pump so you have a carb pump I went with a holley blue for what Iam running.
because even with a proper fuel inj to carb regulator your return line is to small to send back the unused fuel to the tank.. I learnt that the hard way

jlabster should buy a rope to hang!
i already did this. Mine runs fine. I have an 88 that I did this too a few years ago. First you need to change the fuel pump out to low pressure one. Then make sure you have the timing set back to tdc. After it starts, adjust your timing so the car runs smother. If you are still using the original computer, you will have to make your adjustments by hand, until it smooths out. What I found, is that you will lose horsepower unless you go to an aftermarket ignition system. I am currently undergoing that, and I will let you know how it goes. I will say your backfire is more than likely caused by your timing.

just got done doing this in an 86 GT. all you need is a carburetor, new intake, ignition system including distributor and fuel regulator. i went with a holley 650 double pumper, edelbrock rpm air gap intake and a full msd ignition system from the distributor to the 6al box and wires. get a fuel regulator that is return style and run a return line back to your fuel pump otherwise it gets hot and over heats.

also, i cut the entire stock computer out and wired the fuel pump to a switch on the center console next to the shifter. everything works perfectly now and it sounds much better. i am running about 12 deg advance timing and the light blue/light silver advance springs in my distributor.

you will also need a new fuel pump for carbed cars, the stock efi will blow the seals out of your regulator

I have the same, only a crane set up. It is nice only having three wires in the engine comp. To the firewall. The only problem i have is getting the carb set, but that is my own. If you are backfiring, mess with timing, and check vacuum, other than that, check with posts from 70's and back.
