Arch or anyone....305 Leaking Oil...

Ryan's having some trouble with the 305 in his truck. It started leaking oil really badly the past week(up to 4 quarts or so a day). It had been going through about 2 quarts and was just kind of leaking in multiple spots, till his driveshaft had fallen out, and the truck sat for like 2 weeks without running. After he fixed the driveshaft and began driving it again, it had uppped to 4 quarts or more. This weekend, he started fixing it and went about replacing lots of parts. And its leaking about the same, maybe even a little more. He drove down to the gas station and back( a round trip of about 5 miles) and used 3.5 qurts of oil. I can't remember all of the parts that he replaced( i wrote most of them down, but I can't read what I wrote), but I'll try to as much as I can. Here it goes: timing set, with new gasket and cover, new oil pump, oil pressure sender, new front seal, and he put a sleeve on the harmonic balancer. But its still (majorly) leaking, and he said it all seems to be pretty much coming from the front seal area. Have any other guesses to what it might be, or suggestions? I'll try to get him to come on tomorrow and explain exactly what he did and all that, because I got all this second-hand so something might have gotten left out.

if it seems to be from front seal then the balancer is bad (sleeves rarely work) my first thought was rear seal

yeah, the rear seal is good from what he says. He said something about it being the balancer, but he added a 'but' onto it when he said it. I just hope he can get it fixed, he has such bad luck with cars, and none of his are working right now(T/A needs the carb rebuilt, and something is messed up in the wheel area, and the k-car is dumping antifreeze), and he just dropped a good bit of money into this one to make it stop leaking and it still is.

Okay, here's what I changed/added: zoom double roller timing set, mr. gasket chrome timing cover with matching gaskets and new seal, new rear main seal, melling 70 psi oil pump with new 5/8" pickup and melling pump shaft with pinned steel collar, new oil pan gasket, mr. gasket chrome mid height valve covers and new chrome hold downs and t-bolts, holly pro-flo air cleaner, and a freshly rebuilt edlebrock performer 1405 600 cfm manual secondary- manual choke carburator(non emissions)[not yet installed-rebuilding just about finished],new water pump and a new 3 core radiator with a 160 degree thermostat.

The truck itself already had this before the new stuff: the 84 vin code H 305 four barrel small block with edlebrock performer dual plane intake manifold(non emissions)with matching edlebrock cam kit(non emissions). The pollution pump, heat recycler tube assembly, egr valve, charcoal canister, and catalytic converters have all been removed. Also, presently flowing through stock exhaust manifolds and dual 2 1/4" exhaust with glass pack mufflers.

I also have a set of heddman 1 3/4" inch primary tube, 3" collector, long tube headers that I will be installing sometime soon. Also soon to come is my new exhaust- I have to fix it because it annoys me that Mayhem is louder than my truck. I am installing 6" straight stacks with tractor flaps, through the bed connected to the headers with 3 inch pipe with no mufflers and (possibly) a flamethrower kit.

I just picked up the new stock harmonic balancer, and will be installing it when the weather clears up here. Hopefully that clears up the leakage. If not, I have no idea where to go next. Well, I know what could be wrong after that, I just son't want to think about it. I've been having to take Danielle's Spirit to work and its a pain in the butt playing car tag. She goes to work, flies home so I can drive to where I work on time, and its really getting annoying for both of us. Though it has saved me a lot of $$$ on gas right now.

it wasn't leaking as bad as I thought at first, but its still a leak. I haven't got around to fixing the harmonic balncer yet, been too busy, but I did put the new carb on the other day, and that already made it start to run better(not leak less, just run better )

I'm off this weekend(for once) so if it doesn't rain(which it is supposed to of course) I might get a chance to fix it on Saturday. Can't Friday, have to go with Danielle to see about that loan, and can't on Sunday, have to go take a test to get into a electrician's apprentice program. Wish me luck. I need a better job. Or at least, a better boss. My current one is a real jerk. He's a d***head to everyone at that place and no one likes him. He's even mean to the mentally handicapped dude that works on Maintanence. How wrong is that?! Oops.. if I get on that subject, I won't stop, so, I'm out.

a little update... harmonic balancer is on. Still leaking a little bit of oil, but that leak was also discovered. Where the pollution parts used to be, there were 2 bolt holes. These holes should not have been through-holes, but someone used to long of a bolt, and punched through. This should be fixed when the truck comes back form its vacation by the side of the road, :sigh: and hopefully no more leaky.

yes, especially when you find the main problem after the truck was 'fixed' and on its test drive, and breaks down alongside of the road. Violently. :banghead:

When did this happen? Or is the answer to my question right in front of my face?

the oil wasn't the reason it broke down.. Going 65 mph hour down the road, Ryan hears this tremendous BANG and nearly loses control of the truck. He gets it stoped quickly(thank god for newer brakes, something he usually doesn't have) and gets it to the side of the road. Now let me try to remember what broke.... okay, i think the tie-rod ends snapped off,(cause he just bought a new set), and he had to buy a bunch of new parts. That baby ain't going nowhere. You can't drive it, till its fixed because the wheels don't move now. He's going to fix it tomorrow morning.

Reading that post makes me want to change my tie rod end ends.
