I think too many people look too much at the cats and think that they are the key to making horsepower. Often times you can have a car that meets emissions and doesn't hurt horsepower.
I think its the least we can do as car guys is make our cars legal to try and change the image that we have.

exactly, kind of like the moron that I got my car from, had deleted the egr, and when I bought it it had been replaced, but not bolted down so I had to fix it. EGR doesn't hurt hp one bit (and I did find it helps gas mileage enough to see it)

there are minimal gains over current stock ones due to the fact they are already high flow, the only reason to replace a cat on a car that is obdii compliant is failure, and even on the early 90's cars the cats flow well
