its not good to chop them, some springs have different spring rates, if its progressive the ride is damaging to the front end.some manufactures make chop-able srings .they have the same spring rate in the coils so you can chop them to fit.

and just to ad the differences between progressive and "chop-able" springs, progressive springs have different gaps between the coils, the gaps get shorter near the end of the coil, so that the first part of the coil is not as firm(with the gaps further apart) and the last bit it firmer(shorter gaps), non-progressive the space between the coils are equal
