engines

first of all im a bit of a newb. i was wondering about the sr20 engines. which sr do you think is the best. also i can get a hold of LS1 engine is it possibleeeeeto throw one of those in any of these inport cars? also any other sugested engines apreciated. i am maybe looking into an rx-7 or a 240sx im not absolutley positive. thanks for your help. p.s. sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Nastyzed 01-11-2006 07:35 PM

If your going the LS1 route in the import.. Get a older jag or datsun. I remeber awile back i was driving down highway 7 and i noticed a jag in the rear mirror.. An older 2 door im thinking that V12 is rumbling more then my 383 stroker. He rolls up beside me and has chevy bowtie badges on the fenders. He rolls ahead a bit more and it says powered by chevrolet above the plate.

DustinS 01-11-2006 07:46 PM

do you think its possible to heave an LS1 into one of the japaneese makes?

rabbitman 01-11-2006 08:04 PM

Yes, it is possible to put a V8 into a 180, 240, RX7, etc. You can do anything if you have the patience, and CASH. The only problem with these conversions, is the amount of chassis strengthening. Those cars are not meant to handle the wieght, and torque of V8's. If you don't stengthen the frame, and body, you won't have opening doors, or trunk, and your hood won't line up. And it won't take long. There was a vid a while back, of a supercharged 350 small block in a 180Z. If anyone can find it, it's the grey car, and it lays rubber on a roll at about 50 mph. Not sure if it was on Streetfire or not.

DustinS 01-11-2006 08:35 PM

sr20's... yes no.. types.. diferent engines

jdmsteR 01-11-2006 08:49 PM

LS1 swap into an FD rx-7 (3rd gen) would make a very quick car.. there are mounts that companies have made..check out v8rx7.com...if the fd's are outta your price range, look at the 1st and 2nd gens too, they have mount kits for nearly all big block chevy's, both carb and fuel injected

DustinS 01-11-2006 09:16 PM

thanks a lot i did know if i could sucessfully put an engine of that size sucessfully into an rx-7. the weight would not be too much..balance. also would i need to make my chasis stronger?

B6T 01-11-2006 10:10 PM

Instead of putting a V8 into a RX7, why don't you put a 13B into a Camaro. :D

If you aren't a retard, you won't blow up a rotary. Ironic how the only people bashing rotaries are the ones that don't know anything other then what they've read on the internet. And we all know how accurate information on the internet is...

NiTeRiDeR 01-12-2006 04:40 AM

ANY Hybrid 240Z gets my vote.
RB bolts right into a 240Z using Z31 hardware... but if you want to do anything that involves cornering well you will need custom stuff.

DustinS 01-12-2006 04:19 PM

2JZ in an rx-7 over LS1? and yes i was actually thinking about buying a camaro or firebird and dropping that engine in it.

v8mike 01-13-2006 10:41 AM

240z's, rx7's and porsche 944's are all very good choices for LS1/LT1 engine swaps. The pushrod v8's are great for the swaps b/c this engine configuration is surprisingly compact for its displacement.

Do a search for renegade hybrids on google to find out more info on the 944 based swaps.

Supra motor into a camaro? Aside from the novelty factor, I dont see the rationale behind that project. For the cost of the swap, you could expect outstanding power, fuel economy (relative term, of course) and reliability from the LS1.

2TONE_93GT 01-13-2006 10:44 AM

v8 into the rx7 would be the win IMO :drive:

NiTeRiDeR 01-13-2006 02:10 PM

How much do the older RX7's and 944s weigh? I know the 240Z only weighs in at 2250lbs (give or take).

DustinS 01-13-2006 03:58 PM

sorry for not makeing that clear i was talking abou tthe 2JZ in the rx-7.

B6T 01-14-2006 03:25 AM

Instead of taking a rotary engine out of an RX7 to replace it with a V8, why don't you educate yourself on the ways of the rotating trochoid before you make any stupid decisions. Ok bye.

Tomek6 01-14-2006 03:42 AM

yeah. Swap a 13B into an FD/FC from a Cosmo and you're golden. :thumbsup
and your car will still handle/corner nice. No heavy ass engine ruining ur weight distribution.

i think you mean the 20B? 13B is what alrdy came in the rx-7's.

B6T 01-14-2006 02:02 PM

No Tomek is right... the 13B came in the Cosmo. The 20B also came in the Cosmo but in a rare model trim. The 13B from the Cosmo is the best one to get... it's usually referred to as the 13BRE, because that is whats cast into the intake manifold.

v8mike 01-14-2006 02:07 PM

LS1 into a 3rd gen adds a whopping 40 lbs to the front end. REALLY ruins that weight distribution....heheh.

I agree that 40lbs is barely noticable, thats weight could be offset by moving the battery to the back of the car and by removing some unnecessary accessories from the engine. But what you fail to realize is that with a rotary engine all it's mass is mounted way down low in the chassis which keeps the cars centre of gravity low to the ground, which ultimately pays off in handling. That's one of the advantages of the rotary, it's lightweight and compact size allows it to be placed down low and behind the front axle line (technically making the RX7 a mid-front engine car). With a V8, the engine is mounted much higher in the chassis (hood interference is one of the problems with the V8 swap) which raises the centre of gravity of the car, which has a negative effect on the car's handling. On the other hand, this does increase weight transfer to the rear wheels on a launch, which I guess helps out with drag racing, which is what most people who swap V8s into RX7s seem to be interested in.

what's the difference between this 13BRE that came in these cosmo's compared to the 13B n/a like in a fc32 gxl, what about the trannies, what year did these come in the cosmo's?

B6T 01-14-2006 06:42 PM

I don't know all the exact differences but it probably has different rotors (different CR and weight), has 4 ports as opposed to your 6 port engine, maybe a different apex seal material (steel vs cast iron), electronic oil metering pump, etc etc. I'm just guessing, but those are usually the main differences between the engines. I've only been working with rotaries for the last 5 months so I haven't learned everything about them yet.

Thats exactly why I love the RX-7 and its Rotary engine so much. Altho drag racing is fun. Id rather have a nice circuit racing car.

The 13B-RE that came in the cosmo has the same turbo setup the 20B has and makes a bit more power than the FC3S motor. I believe the engine code for the FC3S is (13B-REW) All the cosmos came with a 4-speed semi automatic. (correct me if im wrong) They were made between '90-96. Which would make it legal to import now. :lala:

2 Attachment(s)
just go with a Pulsar SR20DET with NOS and build the ultimate sleeper like this

No the turbos are different. I've seen both 20B turbos and 13BRE turbos side by side and they aren't the same. It does make more power then the FD 13BREW, which means it might have bigger turbos, but they aren't as big as the 20B turbos. I think you're right about the Cosmo engine, the ones I saw were all automatics. The engine code for the FD3S is 13BREW, the code for the FC3S is 13BT. :D

Tomek6 01-15-2006 02:11 PM

I know the 13B in the cosmo has the same "sequential" turbo setup as the 20B. I dunno if the turbo's are bigger on the 20b or not. Probably are. The 13B from the FC3S is a single turbo motor.

DustinS 01-17-2006 09:00 PM

SR20DET in an rx-7.. ive looked into this for a 240sx but in an rx-7...so should stick with stock rx-7 engine? no V8 swap.

trinituner-EL 01-18-2006 11:00 AM

some guys back home put the RB26DETT in the seven's but... the best is a turbo rotary with spray..lol
