Finally got enough nerve.

Well I just got back from a little drive (just for fun). I had finally gained enough balls to check out how fast my '01 Z28 really is (Top speed). And all I can say is wow. The needle passed by the last available dash on the speedo and I will estimate it to be at about 160mph before I got too scared. What an addrenalin rush. How fast is the topspeed really for my car cuz it was still pulling pretty hard and I still have 6th gear to explore?:D

MeenZ28 10-02-2006 06:09 PM

You were doing 160 in 5th?

zheiling 10-02-2006 06:16 PM

Yeah at like 5400 rpm +/- 100 rpm

MeenZ28 10-02-2006 06:21 PM

Im impressed.

paarman97maro 10-02-2006 06:32 PM

what are your mods again?

No engine mods, just lowered suspension in the front. If you are suprised because I said it was pulling pretty hard I don't mean that I was still jammed against the seat. I meant that the needle was still increasing at a pretty reasonable rate.

I know what you meant.

Well thats interesting. Had no idea stock Zs could bury the needle in 5th.

69z-28 10-02-2006 07:58 PM

dont bother with 6th. when your going that fast at WOT, 6th gear will just decrease your speed. i went about 110 in 4th, then grabbed 5th and did maybe 130 then grabbed 6th and it slowly started falling down. realistically, you will pull 4th up to 140 or so and 5th will get you up there but 6th is just too low to pull in.

Mike Jones 10-02-2006 08:02 PM

That's insane, if a cop would have seen you that wouldn't have been a ticket but jail time. That and if you would have hit a pothole you'd be dead right now.
That really is a scary speed to be going on public roads.

blue89vert 10-02-2006 08:06 PM

haha thats awesome! my car pulls so frickin hard right up to its top speed...lol....i think its about 95

FORCE_FED_Z 10-02-2006 08:12 PM

To be honest, I wouldn't have even gone after you. But guess what, no matter how fast your car is, a radio is always faster. Not too mention I would have been sure to get as good a look as possible.

I won't preach at you too much because I did run my car up once or twice but it was on a stretch of empty freeway that I know very well. Its fun to do once, but don't get in the habit- you will be caught eventually and yes, Chad is right. It would be an automatic arraignment in front of your local magistrate. Typically anyone going over 100 would get arraigned unless they have a REALLY good reason. I won't get into the long list of infractions you could be charged with, just trust me that it would be quite a laundry list.

But I doubt your car had much more in it. And yes- 6th gear is useless. You car would hit the rev limiter in another couple rpm anyway. Also- speedo's aren't dead-nuts accurate either so keep that in mind.

Your dad just got his leg cut off in the lawn mower and you're taking him to the hospital so he doesn't die.

your wife is having a baby...ok maybe not b/c thats probly makin it worse....ummmm the gas pedal got stuck? :lolsign: maybe someone called you and was shot and you needed to get to them asap! just some guesses. maybe joe will chime back in and tell you some

archemedes 10-02-2006 08:38 PM

your car won't do 160 the fastest anyone has gotten a stock one was 130 and that was on a racetrack with the governor deleted (it shuts off at around 120) that's when the front lifted enough to have no steering (keep in mind the c4 vette top speed was under 200mph)

FORCE_FED_Z 10-02-2006 09:03 PM

Someone getting shot- more than likely not, unless it was a direct relative about to die in the hospital..but even then if they were that close you should have been there to begin with..

Wife having a baby- if the kid is half-way out and there is a big mess, but doubt it then because its actually more dangerous- should just pull over and pop the kid out the rest of the way..

You could play 'what-if's' all night, but the fact is most people think they can drive that fast and control the car, but realistically most people can't if something were to happen. Its dangerous, reckless, selfish, ignorant, well I could go on for a long time.

Generally if you are going to do better hope you get pulled over by a cool cop who won't take you right in. Another thing- don't try to BS a cop. There is nothing more obvious than a person trying to make up a story to justify their stupidy. Trust me when I tell you, honesty goes a lot farther than playing ignorant.

That's very true. My husband has gotten out of some very sticky situations by being his brutally honest self.

zheiling 10-02-2006 09:43 PM

This run to 150+ was safely scouted I had a friend watch for vehicles and I knew the road very well. That is the fastest I have ever gone and proply won't ever go that fast again. Just had to try it.

blue89vert 10-02-2006 09:46 PM

arch said the fastest you could have gone was 130...

96camaro 10-02-2006 09:51 PM

I've governed my V6 out at 120 mph so I'd hope a LS1 could go more than 130.

I have heard all sorts of limits for top speed. I have heard 155mph 169mph and others. My cousin has a '01 T/A and his goes over 150mph. Someone on here has to know what I am talking about. All I can honestly say is that mine went past the 155 mark on the speedo.

69z-28 10-02-2006 10:58 PM

yes. it should be able to pull past 150. my friends dads LS1 vette does abot 175 tops so basically same motor, slightly differnt car, makes sense to me. dont think about 6th tho.lol it sucks, but it sure is nice to do 90mph at 2200 rpm hehe

archemedes 10-02-2006 11:14 PM

the factory speedo at any speed over 100 is almost a best guess (acurate within 5% or less) on any public road going that fast isn't possible due to road irregularities, the new vettes take almost 2 laps at a race track to get to that speed (like daytona) aerodynamics is your enemy not engine (the ls1 engine in a streamliner can push it over 300mph stock at bonneville) the fbodies in the 200mph club (there are not that many) are all purpose built and have a full belly pan

paarman97maro 10-02-2006 11:20 PM

I guess you need a radar gun then. Then youll find out.

archemedes 10-02-2006 11:25 PM

that is the only way to time them (and they aren't even that accurate, sanctioning bodies use sensors and computers)

Good to know next time I fly past a cop at 190 in my z06

archemedes 10-02-2006 11:28 PM

when he gets the error he'll know (of course they'll be stopping you for the stolen car anyway)

Do you really think that if a cop was sitting on the side of a road behind some trees or something that he would even know what happened. Flying by at over 150 he would probly not even see you. He would hear you though.

paarman97maro 10-03-2006 12:03 AM

depends if he has his radar(s) turned on I suppose.

Phate 10-03-2006 12:17 AM

Force Fed, let me ask you this though. I know by far the duities of certain types of officers, city cops, state troopers, etc. But this was my situation about a year ago.

Friend of mine calls me crying, shes locked herself in the bathroom of her appartment where her boyfriend has been beating her with a curtain rod. You can hear him beating on the door. I call the cops right after I get off the phone, and jump in my car with a baseball bat. (Yes I know stupid stupid, but I was going on adrenaline) and was booking doing about 75 in a 45. State trooper flys behind me and throws on his lights, I pull over, and he starts to run the plates, I wave my hand out of the window and tell him to come over. Finally he comes over and I tell him what happened and ask him to follow me to the scene and he can give me a ticket there. He refused, told me to call the sheriffs dept (dumbass, I just told him I already did. Im really pissed now) and walked back to his car to check my plates (I guess) and 15 mins later gave me a speeding ticket. As soon as he got out of sight, I flew off again, speeding once again, and got there after the sherriffs had shown up and arrested him.

Now, I told the judge what happened, and he didnt care whatsoever. That was one of my major speeding tickets, im just glad I didnt get reckless endangerment on that one. I just dont understand SOME cops sometimes, I dont care if you want to give me the ticket, thats fine, just let me get where the hell I was going first because its damn important.

PS - She turned out okay, she had to goto the hospital because of a possible concussion but was fine. Hes now serving 6 yrs for armed robbery and assault with intent.

Mikerock 10-03-2006 01:04 AM

i didn't read any of this ****.

but 4th gear is your 1:1 gear, your going to get the most HP out of it.

97z2801ss 10-03-2006 02:06 AM

i wouldnt have done that

rediculous

CHINGON 10-03-2006 02:06 AM

My friend used to have a 96 Z28,
I was with him on the car and he got upto 140mph but let go because he got scare...:D
Anyways, the car was all stock no exhaust no intake no nothing. So…if a stock LT1 goes over 130mph I guess an LS1 will have no problem with that.

you had no reason to speed at all, if you had gotten there and done something you'd be in prison. That is what the police are for, and you flying down the road if someone pulled out you might have killed someone that's why you got the ticket, if the cop was a jerk you'd have sat in his car for a while as he ran plates and what not

hllywd 10-03-2006 10:15 AM

Unless your trying to set some record at bonneville the only thing that counts is what you can do in a quarter mile.
And its safer at a track.

Phate 10-03-2006 10:42 AM

Sorry Arch, but I have to ask. What would YOU have done then?

I have a very strong value of protecting my friends. I cant sit idle while it takes the police 20 mins to respond to a domestic disturbance call and she gets beaten to death.

call teh police as the law states. You going there only escalates the situation, next time tell your friend to leave not lock herself in a room. She put her self in the situation since it sounds like that was not the first time something like that happened, and if he had a gun you'd be useless dead in the doorway

I like ware your heads at jesse

Phate 10-03-2006 01:00 PM

While I do agree with what your saying Arch, about the gun, the situation, and everything else. The thought of myself not trying to do something, and her get killed or something equally as tragic, having that on my mind for the rest of my life. If I had to do it over again, i'd probally do the exact same thing.
