Question oil pressure drops @ idle

while driving the oil pressure is good...once i get to a light or stop the pressure DROPS to nothing...once i get going it rises again

is this normal or is there a leak somewhere?

i just got the car so i don't know if it's burning/leaking oil...yet

IF it's after 10 min. of driving after the car has warmed up.. I believe thats normal.. since you don't need that much oil pressure for an idle engine with minimal load to protect all the moving component.. how much pressure is it dropping? General rule of thumb is any pressure between 20-100 PSI is ok. My car is suppose to be @ 40 PSI idle, but I"m around 60 PSI idle, and near 80 while running.. I got paranoid like you did.. but didn't seem to notice much difference. It may also be just your gauge.

goto www.bobistheoilguy.com then forums.. do a search, or post your questions there.

EDIT: Near zero @ idle? Then I think there's a problem.. try and get an oil pressure gauge ( other then the one on your cluster ) and see if thats the gauge or not.. check out the website posted.. the oil gurus are there ( not refering to oil that you can smoke and get high on )

I had the same problem on my camaro. I first replaced the oil pressure sending unit but that didnt help. Then I swapped in a mechanical gauge and it works perfect now. You can buy a white face Sunpro oil pressure gauge at Princess Auto for around $10.

hey, if your car is an auto... try putting it into neutral when you are stopped... I had that problem in an old ef that I had, and whenever i 'shifted' into neutral... it went away.

other possibility is pressure relief valve/spring

My oil pressure has never gone below 15psi idle, usually at 20psi. When cold it's 60psi. Measured by a Sunpro 2-5/8" mechanical gauge.
