today's progress.(sucked)
well yesterday went extremely well, getting out the whole exhaust, only bad thing was dropping a nut into the starter hole(we thought) and breaking a stud on the solenoid. so today we started by going to get a new solenoid. after 3 hours of ******** we finally got it. first we had to find a solenoid or just buy the whole new starter but finally we got one from Napa and had to drive a decent distance to get it, then it took another hour driving around looking for the stupid inversed Torx that holds the solenoid on the starter. so after all that we got home and started to get into the car again. we pulled the trans out and couldnt find the stupid nut we lost, so im not sure if it actually went in there or its just somewhere on the cross member or somethign where we cant see it. anyways after that we changed the motor mounts which actually wasnt too terrible, but still a pain. dropped the passenger side header in, screwed with that for a while and then did the drivers side which is supposed to be easier but turned out to be a huge pain because the number 1 primary tube doesnt clear the steering shaft so we beat the hell out of it and hopefully its good now. i still have so much stuff to do tomorrow but hopefully it goes smooth and just progresses. heres some pictures of todays work.

it is supposed to go behind the linkage like that but mine is so damn tight. i think i might have an aftermarket steering rod or some ****. i know the guy had some solid shaft instead of a rag joint or something lke that he said but idk if he took it off when he sold it to me or thats the thing thats giving me trouble. either way, i have the headers and this thing needs to get done soon so if anyone else has a better idea than beating it, let me know. either way ive already made up my mind that it needs to be that way and im doing whatever it takes to make it fit.
and the EGR tube has a plug and clamp on it so its basically a cap. im not gonna spend money on block off plates. you dont even see it anyways.

I think that I personally would opt for modifying the steering linkage/rod before I would dent and beat up my new headers. Modifying the headers WILL affect performance. Modifying the steering will not.

There are many threads on modifying the steering shaft over at CamaroZ28.com. They seem to think it is safe enough?? Most either just move it slightly or replace it with a different type. Might want to check it out.
