Yeah, takin out a couple bolts and swappin a y-pipe sounds easy but you'll find its not. When I did headers on my first car I thought I would just take the bolts out so that I could save the manifolds and headers just in case, but after about an hour of bloody knuckles with the car the sawzall looked a lot more appealing than a wrench with 2ft of swivels and extensions..
Chris- the answer to your cut-out ques is easy. Do you know anyone who is good with a welder? There really isn't enough room in front of the cat to put the cut-out. What I did was take the stock cat and cut 6" out of the middle of it and weld it back together so it was a mini-cat. That made room in front of the cat for the cutout and it also kept something that resembled a cat for inspection purposes. You could always do the same thing but put it behind the cat to be sure it passes a visual should you need that.

gutting the cats will make it throatier wont it? it made it a bunch louder on my v6 so im sure a v8 without cats will be considerably louder.
but i got a good idea on how to do this without pulling my y-pipe
um, no offense but why dont you just do it the right way and change everything at once or get an aftermarket y pipe for manifolds, or shorty headers. i can see cutting/gutting the cat on a single cat car but its really difficult and way more work than its worth on the dual cat cars.

I wouldn't do just one..not really worth all the headache IMO not to mention the flow issues you might have.
A good cat doesn't stop flow as much as people think they do. They cut down on sound, but not so much the flow. I'm not saying they aren't a restriction, but guttin the cats isn't going to be a miracle horsepower giver...

yeah i know that, im not going for more flow. im going for throatier sound. im going to take a good look, soak the hell outta the bolts and see if they can start coming out without problem...but getting my trans out is first priority today...
