I have to "REV" the engine up to 4,000 rpm so that the automatic trans can shift into the next gear, what can be the problem here guys?

Sorry I do not have an answer. I do however, have a 1980 Honda Accord- with a rebuilt transmission not yet installed in my garage. Beauty of a car. First $1,000 bucks can have it.

You don't say whether it makes any difference if you manually shift it. And you also don't say if you checked the fluid level. That's this first thing you should try.

Have any "check engine" or similar warning lights come on? It is possible it could be the TPS [throttle position sensor] that may need to be replaced or has a loose wire/bad connection.
