Question 87 Octane in VTEC Engine ???????

Hi everyone , I'm a Honda Prelude owner , as you know it has a VTEC engine ,in the manual they recommand using Octane 91. when i first got this car all i got was using 91 Octane or higher all the time , but at that time gas was like 80 cents a litre , but now with it going up as high as 1.50 / litre i was thinking about just u$ing octane 87 , can i damage my car in any long term way , do you guys have any useful advice for me

my engine = 2.2 L ,4 cylinder so its not as bad as a 6 or 8 cylinder car
but thinking about it now i wish i would have got an integra 1.8 L or some kind of civic with 1.6 L engine , but now i'm glad i didn't buy that 98 mustang after all

yo here's another question , why don't they make regular cars that run on propane , why only en taxi cabs , imagine a pimped out propane civic lol

thanks Peter C

Haha.. I love how people get too cheap to buy the proper fuel for their cars... Just sell it and buy a shitbox then you don't have to worry about it anymore..

But to answer your question, no it won't harm the engine if it's stock... As the stock ECU/motor has sensors (knock) that will pull timing when it detects knock (detonation/pinging) which will happen if u put 87 and beat on it. But the stock ECU will do it's best to prevent it and therefore will loose HP and TQ. I don't know if you will notice it yourself... I know I would.

IMO, go with 91, otherwise sell your car to someone who would spend the extra dollar or two to fill up on 91.
