civic speedo problems

I am new to Civics. I just bought a 93 si and sometimes when I start driving the speedo goes nuts. It goes up and down and does not give a solid reading. Any ideas
What is why best but for mods. I just want to due some small things

My EK sometimes did that. Turns out there is a speed sensor on the transmission. Has wires running to it and in heavy rain it takes on water if not sealed correctly. I had to disconnect mine and remove it (1 bolt) and clean it out. Also siliconed it afterwards to prevent the problem.

Check out the sensor on the tranny. On the EK it's the one mounted on the tranny below the throttle body.

i agree with v82slo, its most likely the speed sensor on the transmission. Good idea to clean it and silicone it back in. Check the wire for any damage to it also.

i had that problem with my crx, but with my rex all i had to do is send some oil down the cable that conects to the back of the speedo, after the ef gen. i think the clusters went to all wiring even for the speedo, might be the harness in the back of the cluster
