Question Does this sound like an ECU problem?

Hello!

I am in the process of trying to figure out why this '91 Civic consistently stalls. It's an RT (AWD) with a 5-speed and 1.6L. It's my woman's car, and she would like to use it to get back and forth to work. However, almost without fail, it will die at the same point on her commute. After a little research, we thought it might be the coil. We replaced that with a new one, but the problem persists. I've driven the car several times, and I found that it will even die if you're on the gas. The ignition just cuts out completely. Other than that, the car runs like a top. Doesn't use any oil. Gets 35mpg.

So, I am now wondering if it may be a faulty ECU. If the ECU itself is bad, will it still give an LED code to indicate so? Or, would it give you a false diagnosis? I've seen the same ECU all over eBay for cheap, so I'll probably just go ahead and switch it out to see if the problem goes away. I just don't know what else it can be! As I mentioned, the ignition just cuts completely out at the same point on her commute (probably around ten minutes of driving). Sometimes, it will run fine after that. Other times, it dies again. Any ideas? Also, ECUs are different for manual and automatics, correct?
