it might be expensive to pickup a completed ls/b20/vtec engine because people usually put in other aftermarket parts in it, so i say with a vtec conversion setup, build it to match your specifications. like if your going n/a, or for boost, or even stock with bolt ons. you can pick up parts and stuff through the classifieds here, or our sponsors, and/or optionjdm

a swap with all supporting parts can be easily over $3000. I would recommend a b18a or b18b. The used japanese engine can land you around the 800 dollar mark and all the supporting parts will land you at around the $2000 range. This will leave you with extra cash to do some work with the engine wether it be ls/vtec or bolt ons.

If you are goin to be swaping a motor into a 89 civic si. You have to do some research. Because you car come wit a cable clutch and most dohc vtec engines have a hydrolic clutch; meaning that you will need to either purchase a cable tranny or purchase a conversion kit. Second if I am not mistaken that year civic the spedo works from a cable so if you want you spedo to work ur gonna need a jdm cluster. (not 100% on that one) Then your gonna need to worry about wat kind of computer ur gonna run because you car is odb0 and most dohc vtec motors are at least obd1 meaning you might have to do some wiring modification or use odb0 dizzy and injectors. But again im am not 100% on this information. I would suggest you do a lot of research. There is a lot of ppl on this site that know a lot about swaps. But your gonna need to ask some more specific questions.

OBD0 B16a. about $2000 for the complete swap (with mounts, linkage, axles etc.) from Tiger Japan. You only need to run 4 new wires. Very easy, lots of fun and you can always go turbo later on if you want more power.

If I could do it all over again though, I would build my a6 and turbo it = more power for similar cost.

Alright well guys it all bears down to what he really meant by 3000 dollar swap. Out the door for 3000 or 3000 parts. I would imagine based on his replies that he is going to get a shop to do the installation and at that point his options would probably end up being b16,b18a otherwise if he could source something cheaper from the forums.

obd 1 conversion harness or splicing $100
hydro conversion mount $250
axles blah blah misc...300 ish
CAMS AND VALVETRAIN DOHC NON VTEC HEAD $800 ISH SOURCE IT RIGHT
and your laughing to a more reliable power house with boost capability...
I like vtec and all but its pricey when you can build equal performance without the switchover
