Engine lifetimes are based on vehicle maintence. I have seen almost every manufacturer reach over 500,000 kms but really it bears down to maintence intervals and if they were ever skimped on. To some poeple they just hop in there cars and go and really lack maintencing there vehicle on a regular baisis. In my opnion the reasoning behind that is because poeple don't put aside money for vehicle maitence and its easy for shops to assume this. Now its easy for the customer to say i don;t have the money right now maybe next time. This case it is usually regular replacement iteams, but can still be detrimental to the engine/
Overall i suppose its how the car is taken care of and in most cases the engines last longer then the bodys.
