how do i know how tight to tighten down the oil pan agaisnt the rubber gasket so...

...it doesnt crack or leak?

There should be a torque spec for it. Look in a book or online for your type of engine and get a torque wrench.

you tighten it just enough until you see the rubber gasket toward the oil pan lip.
