ive heard that B16s are great in stock form for boost because of the near perfect rod/stroke ratio. there's a guy that runs at shanonville with a turbo B16 EF hatch, he ran 12.1 in a race against me once, pretty sure he said the motor was almost all stock. it wasnt even tuned that great, was running one of those shitty SAFCs, imagine the possibilities with a proper tune!

GsR for sure. a type-r motor has a very high compression ratio that isn't really ideal for boosting, more of an NA application. I've seen a few guys run 6psi on a stock type-r all day long (im going to be doing that this winter ) but if i were to do it from the beginning id go with a gsr motor for sure. the way the combustion chamber is shaped in the b18c1 usually makes quite a bit more power after turbo.

if you only have 6 grand for a motor with boost and want to make good numbers, if you have a civic, get a d series (d16z6 or d16y8), build it and boost it. you can get over 350whp (400+ mostlikely) with the d series. that includes the turbo kit and tuning, and building of the d.
a gsr is a good motor, but note building a gsr isn't cheap. parts are more expensive for a b series. with 6 grand, you can get a gsr motor and run light boost on it. to run more, you need to build the b series, and thats where it starts adding up. the b series can make better numbers than the d no doubt, but if you are on a tight budget and really want good numbers, then go with option one. if you just want a stock motor (reliability or daily driver purposes) with a little more punch, i'd take this option, gsr+turbo kit+tuning.
if you want a b series making good numbers for cheap, then grab a ls block (50$-200$) or a gsr block (i've seen some go for ~$500) and build the bottom end. then grab a vtec (or non-vtec) head and build that. if you go with the ls block, do a ls/vtec setup (not needed obviously for the gsr) and then you could make some good numbers outta the b series. the cost MIGHT be with in your budget, but you'll have to research on the prices.
you could also try and find a complete motor (used, freshly built) in the classifieds here or on another site. however, you don't know the quality of the build, so that may be an issue. look into that if you go this route.

i am gonna have to agree with drift and shift on this one! 6 grand can dwindle away quickly with a motor and boost setup. I would take a stock Ls motor and boost it and then covert to vtec later if more serious.
