Performance computer chip in 2008 civic?

I have a 2008 honda civic EX 5 speed (not SI.) I have seen those computer chips which supposedly give the car better gas mileage and/or more power. I am wondering if this will actually work? And if so, might they damage the engine at all? It sounds too good to be true, so I'm going to assume it is. Is there someone who can prove me wrong?
