which is better...a 97 civic lxi automatic transmission or manual transmission?

Your preference...A strict definition of "better" depends on where you drive. On one hand, if you know what your doing, a standard could yield better fuel economy, however if you live in a city or where traffic is often heavy, an automatic makes more sense.
