Help!! AC for my 2002 civic lx is weird!?

Help!! AC for my 2002 civic lx is weird!?
When I turn on the air (normal..no AC) it automatically turns on the AC and i press the button to turn it off but it wont turn off. its cold and i cant turn on my heater..without turning on AC. (just bought this car used) please help!!! thanks
