How many horsepower can you get a Honda Accord or Honda Civic up to?

I'm thinking about buying either a '96-'98 Honda Accord manual or '96 -'00 Honda Civic manual and I want to know how many horsepower each engine can reach before I buy one, as well as how much I would be looking to spend to get the engine to that point, say if it were a stock engine... Any help would be appriciated : )

it all depends on how long you want it to last. Seriously. I've heard of hondas making 600+ hp on the strip, but they only last a quarter mile.

And honestly, it's not about hp, it's about knowing how to drive your car. I constantly outrun people in "built" hondas in a stock Civic CX, the weakest one ever made! Learn how to drive first, then add Hp.
