Want better performance on a 98 Civic HX (Automatic)... What can I do?

My friend bought a 98 Civic HX (AUTOMATIC) the engine has over 100k miles. He still wants to get better Performance out of it. Is it worth putting $ into this engine? Is an engine swap possible since its an automatic? If so, what is the best type of engine?

The hx was put out for fuel econemy rather than power. i beleive they only have around 98 hp the best thing to do is an engen swap. almost all honda engens are interchangable with little work. id go with a 3.8 vtech and switch the auto trans for a 5 speed. check your local junk yards in sure you could find both for a really good deal.
